  • Ep.39 - Peter Joli Wilson. A pioneer of Australian Surf Photography.
    Jan 2 2025

Travis and I walk the elevated driveway to the legendary Peter Joli Wilson's residence. Perched atop a hill, we overlook the distant waters of the Gold Coast. "Please, come in," Joli greets us and invites us in. I've never done a podcast before!" He smiles as we sit at the family dining table. "Don't worry, mate," I reply. I've done a few."

Joli as he prefers to be called is in the upper echelon of Australian Surf Photography, a good friend of previous guest Ted Grambeau, he's credited as a pioneer in the industry. With over four decades of experience, this is an episode full of learnings and not to be missed. From tales of photographing my favourite surfer Kelly Slater, how the industry has changed, to being subscripted into the Vietnam war, there's not too many topics we didn't cover. We conversed for over two hours so I've made this episode into a two-parter.

  • Ep.38 - Dylan Brayshaw.
    Dec 26 2024

Dylan reassures me that we should paddle out here. I don't agree; I've surfed this place for 20 years. A bomb set washes through the keyhole further up where I'm pointing. "Ok, we'll go out here, I say."

Dylan's already 20 meters away, paddling out...I'm arguing alone. lol.

I've been trying to have a conversation with Dylan for over a year. His YouTube clips inspire me when I'm feeling flat to get in the drink. On this day, I not only got to record with Dylan, but I also got to shoot a heaving cyclone swell with him.

There's weird things happening in the world at the moment. Stay Humble Stay Kind Stay Smiling.

  • Ep.37 - Talon Clemow. Award winning film maker, Big Wave Hunter, Adventurer + Owner of One Palm Media.
    Dec 19 2024

Thundercloud...a surf documentary about MASSIVE waves at a life threatening location...this was Talon's pinnacle of his craft at the time...independent film making. Talon's an award winning Cinema film maker that's humble enough to only mention it after pressing him.

In this Episode we talk about his experience working in the TV industry, being head of audio/visual for Billabong at the height of the industry and his drive to make surf movies since being a teenager.

We discuss his love of travel and adventure and what it's like to release a film to the world....spoiler alert....its stressful and rewarding!lol.

Just a heads up...the C bomb is dropped as a quote once in this Ep.

There's so many learnings in this Ep, I especially like how Talon discusses the value of footage and how there's time pressures with each new swell.

  • Tom Woods. How to get paid to do Surf Photography, Commercial Imagery and Travel the world.
    Sep 5 2024

Tom Woods and I met at an Aquatech event, I'd gone to support Sean Scott (not that he needs my support) but I'd met him through the Gold Coast Community and we'd talked about getting him on the show....something that hasn't happened as yet...anyway, I was perusing the gear, talking shop to one of the staff and Tom approached me, " I know that voice...you've got that podcast right?" We got to talking and I quickly decided he'd be a great guest, something he was shy on. Over the next few months, Tom and I have been in contact..I've been a closet fan of his YouTube videos and the content he puts out.

We met up at his local coast, the Sunshine Coast, a trip I rarely take. "I've got a 92-year-old, wheelchair-bound, gambling addict Aunty that I need to take for her fix, before I see her let's shoot and record," I suggested.

In this episode Tom shares a mountain of knowledge, I talk a little too much but still manage to absorb many of his learnings.

Tommy's the real deal and a great example of how chasing clarity has fulfilled some of his dreams and afforded him a lifestyle many are envious of.

  • Odell Harris. The Past, The Present, The Future.
    Aug 29 2024

I've been apprehensive about releasing this, episode 20.

It's always daunting bearing a little of your soul on a public forum, how much sharing of your personal life is too much and how much is actually related to the topic of the show, a feel-good show about something we do...it's simple, we love the ocean and we enjoy being creative around it. One of the topics of discussion is mental health, my anxiety, my partner's bipolar and some of the challenges we've faced. I write this to inform you that we briefly touch on these, some deeper topics and offer forewarning.

We mostly keep it light, around ocean imagery, my previous guests and our surf photography journey. Travis also introduces a new segment to the show which I don't think I answered properly at the time of the interview. lol. As changes go, I think it'll be a regular spot.

It seems a little self-indulgent not only releasing an episode about me, but releasing it on my own show....but.....

hopefully, you find the conversation interesting, a little entertaining and ultimately helpful. It's hard to admit publicly the chinks in the armour I've spent a lifetime hardening.

  • Travis Johnson. Round 2. 1 year on in the world of Surf Photography.
    Aug 22 2024

"I'm the happiest I've ever been!" The Don says to me as we exit the water one afternoon. Once dry and walking to order our favourite Little Mali treat I turn and invite him back on the show to tell the world how he's progressing in his surf photography journey. In this episode I'm stoked to bring you a conversation with an artist that has progressed leaps and bounds since our last conversation nearly a year ago. It brings me joy to see the hard work and sacrifice we all go through as creatives be rewarded. Trav tells me about some of his gaols he's ticked off and some more that are on his hit list. He talks about some of the things he wishes he had of done differently and what he would advise to someone in his previous position.

We don't get too technical in this one, but what we do discuss should provide you the stoke to grab your gear, get out there and get some water on ya!

  • Thomas Baertl. From CEO Banker to Professional Photographer.
    Aug 16 2024

Thomas Baertl sits opposite me over overlooking a different body of water, today we sit at the Power House on the Brisbane River and discuss how this German Banker turned his back on corporate life for the life of a creative.

It takes a certain courage to walk away from a career 20 years in the making, Thomas gives me insight into this, and advice for any listener seeking to do the same.
