Years ago, I worked as a camp counselor in the middle of nowhere. The day the seventh book was released, I had to drive 45 minutes to town to pick up my foot from the post office. There were maybe 3-4 copies of the book including mine floating around our staff as people took turns reading it. in an attempt to avoid spoilers, we set up a lengthy list of codewords for characters, items, and plot points. It still led to a few hilarious spoilers as people caught on to the code, but bringing up Snuffles the Codename brought up a fun memory.
I also appreciated your discussion of house elves and Winky, and it got me thinking about her extreme emotions losing her place and the house elf work ethic and devotion in general. I realize house elves have their own magic and clearly have magical rules of obedience. Not to support the subjecation of house elves, but do you think the connection a house elf has to their master affect their magic and well-being in any way? Dobby is a bit of an exception, but Winky was such a mess I can't help but wonder if dismissing a house elf can normally be magically or physically painful.
