  • Strategic thinking can grow both vegetables and companies.
    Jul 6 2025

Even someone in our most intimate circle can still surprise us when we get them to

share their life stories with us. In this episode, Stephen’s life partner, Karin, explains

how from her earliest memories, she was drawn to nature and that no matter how

exhilarating her myriad challenges in organic farming, running a health-oriented

NGO or doing strategy and management consulting around the globe, she still

recharges her energy by time in the garden or walking in the Jura with her English

setter (and sometimes with Stephen, too).

She shares her early experience at the UN, the independence she may have been

forced to develop at a very early age but which helped her keep her priorities clear

as a parent and a professional and underlines the importance of staying healthy

mentally and physically in order to commit to working in line with one’s personal

values. Along the way, she took two Irish setters to Stanford, helped a ball bearing

factory ready itself to make the transition from Soviet central planning to Western

investor-driven capitalism, and funded mother-child health initiatives in Eastern

Europe and Africa. She has spent much of her career working with different entities

in the UN system on governance, communication, fundraising and strategy, and this

    mission continues today.

Let us know what you think about her career story, and share your thoughts on future

    episodes, too: absence_of_ego@sustainable-outreach.com

  • Opportunistic and flexible : from Boy Scout to talent scout, selling calendars to software, the story of an usual career path far from finished.
    Apr 22 2025

Listen to the intriguing narrative of a young professional who might have ended up working in energy or big pharma except that he was a bit 'math phobic,' and who preferred launching a startup to finishing a degree in business. Hear how Raphael reinforced his natural talents at sales (and cycling) from childhood, discovered a passion for new technology almost before the term existed, and parlayed this combination into a successful career in recruiting IT professionals and software sales at a B2B level internationally. His ideal future career aspiration? Well, it's a navigator's dream of alternating arrival and departure, sharing with others and caring for the planet. Along the way, you might also get inspired to try serious sports as a motivational driver for your professional success.

  • Career Pathways, Part 3: the Drifter
    Mar 13 2025

In this episode, we wrap up our discussion of the three modes of career approaches, focusing on the least planned, the potentially most frivolous yet freedom inducing, which contrasts with the other two sides, "Navigator" and "Explorer " principally by its free form nature and lack of attachment to specific outcomes. Ready to ride the waves before testing the surf, or more inclined to check the Windsurf app and the local meteo before donning your wetsuit? Either way, watch out for the sharks of unplanned circumstances!

    Jan 25 2025

As we continue to look at different modes of managing career pathways, we share our fascination with you about the Explorer approach. Perhaps with less strategic planning than in the Navigator mode, this way of operating still requires planning, research and preparation, with big doses of self-confidence and a willingness to stretch beyond your comfort zone. Explorers are not risk averse, as we'll hear from our special guest, Ruppert, who shares his life journey till now. Grab a strong beverage, and get ready for liftoff!

The good news is that we can all build a stronger base for responding to life's unfair twists and turns.
