The explanation for this comes quickly. While returning to the base, Ashton and his platoon see something appear on their flank, a portal opening to another realm.

Although they defeat the orcs that flooded through before the portal closed, this encounter is but a taste of what’s to come – for as time passes, the portals become more numerous and stand open longer, popping up all over the world. It soon becomes clear that if no means to stop them from opening can be found, humanity will eventually be overwhelmed and extinct as a race…
