Bobby Trask is a 12-year-old kid in a bad place. His father is an abusive drunk with muddled religious views, and his mother, as hard as she tries to defend her son, only ever ends up delaying the inevitable. Things take a turn for the worse one Friday when Bobby brings home a black eye from school.

The following day his father brings him out into the woods on a mission to do "God's Work" and bring him into adulthood. A dark coming-of-age story about the sins of a father and a boy's chance to absolve himself from them.

This story may be short, but it is packed full of well written scenes and scenarios that get your blood boiling and make you want to jump into it and help its protagonist. If you like well written short stories, then this one is worth your time.

Abusive darkness and it's victims

There was so many emotions that went on in this story and I absolutely loved every second of it. Even though it's only an hour long it left me wanting more and for the story to continue. Great writing and great narration.

I quite enjoy short stories because it's easy to find time to listen in one sitting. This is an interesting story, it's got surprising depth considering how short it is. The relationships in the book are well developed and show the complexities of human interactions.

A quick and enjoyable listen, the narrator did a good job but sounded too adult considering they are voicing the thoughts of a 12 year old boy. The pace and tone of the narration were a good match for the story.

Whiskey Devil by Christian Galacar was a good quick read. Bobby is twelve years old and has to witness and few his fathers abusive ways. His mother continues to make excuses for his father. Things change when Bobby gets a black eye from school. This was a good quick read.

Hello, the Publisher's Summary for this book is pretty detailed for a story that runs just over one hour. I don't feel that I can add too much without spoiling. This is a pretty dark and gruesome tale. I felt such compassion for Bobby Trask and the position he was in. I was rooting for him from the beginning.

This is NOT a lighthearted, fun tale. However, I 'enjoyed' (I'm not sure what the right word would be) listening to the unfolding of the story.

This book contains violence, for those of you who do not care for that.

Christian Galacar writes a very compelling and interesting work. John York does an exceptional job as narrator.

Gruesome and Dark

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. It was well written and a great story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character. The fact that he realized that he has learned from his mistake shows growth and growth in a fictional character is always good.

What about John York’s performance did you like?

Great performance. His voice set the stage for the place and era in which the story took place. He was happy and morose at the times that the story called for it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh because it was very satisfying.

I get this story and it's hard to imagine someone having to grow up in a situation like this but this story was hard to listen to. There was so much hate spewing from the father and I can't help but think it just carried down from his father before him. I couldn't stand to listen to the part about the dog. That was unbearable for me.

John York did a fine job narrating. He was gritty as I suppose was the only way to portray the father's hate.
