I would die to find you again.
Five years ago, I bled to death from a knife to the throat. But I didn't stay dead.
I woke up changed, and remembered far too much. I have been haunted by the memories of my past lives ever since.
For five years, I've had the illogical certainty that I've spent lifetimes connected to the same soul. Lifetimes of love, heartache, and betrayal. Was I destined to find them again?
As fate would have it while seeking revenge for my death, my murderer led me straight to her: Sunny.
The first time I saw her, she was trembling with fear behind the bar as I held a gun to her boss' head. Instantly, I knew she was the one. She was terrified of me, but now that I've found her, there's no way I'm letting her go.
She will be mine again. All she needs to do is remember.
Was I Ever Here is a dark romance with a guaranteed HEA. Intended for mature listeners.

With that being said - the story was really good. Heartfelt. Heartbreaking and gut wrenching at times, but LOVE prevailed. I downloaded this book because it was narrated by one of my favorite male narrators, Gabriel Spires - he never disappoints, especially the spicy scenes 🥵
I felt a kinship to Sunny, the FMC. Since I was a child, the ocean has been my place that I go to recharge, to wash away what is drowning me on land and to find myself again. Holding my breath under water & floating on my back, with my ears below the water line, drowning out the world and just listening to the sounds of the sea - just like Sunny would do. I have never heard/read of anyone describing their pull/connection to the ocean the way Naomi Loud did… the pull that I have. It resonated so deep within me.

Emotional rollercoaster love story - but worth the ride!

There is the idea of reincarnation and linked souls finding each other in lifetime after lifetime. But in each lifetime, they are torn apart by tragedy, by an inability to hold on and fully be there for one another. Someone is always being hurt in the pair, and yet they keep circling back to each other.
And in this lifetime, they are Byzantine and Sunny. One who remembers the past lives and love, and one who doesn’t, but feels the connection between them. Sunny is also dealing with depression and mental health issues, and is constantly trying to claw her way back from the loss of her sister. In Byzantine she finally feels something new, but they have A LOT to work through.
There are the classic dark romance tropes (touch her and die, I would burn the world for you…), but in this story they feel different, more somber almost desperate as Byzantine tries to correct his own past actions to prevent the loss of his love and soul. You feel for them both, and every page you desperately hope that Sunny holds on and they find their way back to each other in this lifetime.

I wanted to love this book because the blurb peaked my interest, but I felt like nothing ever really happened. I just wanted there to be more. I did like that the mental health aspect was more realistic than in a lot of books. It showed that it takes time to work through things. There isn’t any magical fix.
