The shocking true story of a bizarre kidnapping and the victims' re-victimization by the justice system.

In March 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, awoke from a sound sleep into a nightmare. Armed men bound and drugged them, then abducted Denise. Warned not to call the police or Denise would be killed, Aaron agonized about what to do. Finally he put his trust in law enforcement and dialed 911. But instead of searching for Denise, the police accused Aaron of her murder. His story, they told him, was just unbelievable. When Denise was released alive, the police turned their fire on her, dubbing her the “real-life ‘Gone Girl’” who had faked her own kidnapping.

In Victim F, Aaron and Denise recount the horrific ordeal that almost cost them everything. Like too many victims of sexual violence, they were dismissed, disbelieved, and dragged through the mud. With no one to rely on except each other, they took on the victim blaming, harassment, misogyny, and abuse of power running rife in the criminal justice system. Their story is, in the end, a love story, but one that sheds necessary light on sexual assault and the abuse by law enforcement that all too frequently compounds crime victims’ suffering.

I happened upon this book with no previous knowledge of this crime. A tragic and courageous story by two remarkable people. I wish I could give them a hug and buy them a craft beer.

Wow. Just wow.

Shocking situation. VPD totally dropped the ball with their inept investigation. ACSO always professional and glad Det. Noticed similarities. I could not stop listening to this book. The way it was written made it hard to stop listening when I pulled into work.

Very sad situation multipled by a crooked police department. Very informative if ever you find yourself in a similar position. I think it took great courage to relive these crimes, by both the offenders and the police, in order to write this book. To the victims and their family and friends I say God Bless you all!

Sad and eye-opening!

I believed this story when it was first brought to the media. I’ve followed it the whole time. But, wow!!! This was life changing simply reading the story. I’ll just pray for them forever. Their daughter and I are birthday buddies.

Shock!

First of all, make no mistake who the bad guys are in this story. It's the perpetrator of the crime, the police and the FBI. Nothing can justify what happened to these two people. That being stated, I have to say that I'm not entirely sure I found them all that sympathetic. I'm almost certain I wouldn't particularly like Denise or Aaron in real life. They come off (in their own words, mind you!) as entitled, self-involved and most discouragingly, woefully unself-aware of their privilege. Perhaps someone should tell them that parties in wine country, a grandfather offering 10 grand a year to his grandchildren (even with strings attached), and having families where you have the opportunity to be embarrassed for asking them to help pay your legal fees, might be an indication that your starting out in life ahead of a great deal of others. Yet the listener is repeatedly reminded how their achievements are down to their own intestinal fortitude and dedication. With as much therapy as they advocate, perhaps that's their coping mechanism. Similarly, be wary of any person who claims to have moved beyond their partner's betrayals, and demonstrates it by stating that they've forgiven them, over and over again. Yeah, that's completely healthy.

What this boils down to for me, though, is that I did feel the frustration and anger, at the indifference, incompetence and malice directed towards them, particularly by the police and FBI, even as the victims were not terribly likable. How Kafka-esque is it to attempt to deny the claim that you are self-absorbed, narcissistic liars, when you are in fact self-absorbed and narcissistic, but not necessarily liars? A tough road, indeed. It's a engaging story, and ultimately refreshing to recognize, despite the self-aggrandizement, that even highly imperfect people deserve support against institutional misconduct.

Compelling, for more complex reasons than planned

My mind is blown by what these two people have been put through. Victimized over and over, the is something very wrong with this world.

what an incredible story

I just finished binging this book. It is a true story and horrificly eye opening. I knew that bias by memebers of the criminal justice system could result in innocent people being charged with crimes they didn't commit. What I don't think dawned on me before reading this is that outright laziness and blatant bias could infect an entire hierarchy of law enforcement from the detectives up to the FBI and turn a victim into a suspect. I can not imagine how Denise and Aaron, the couple in the book, have survived the mental anguish of first being kidnapped and then being continually vilified by the very authorities meant to protect them and solve their kidnapping. I definitely recommend Victim F.

Binge Worthy and Eye Opening

I just finished this amazing book after hearing Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn speak about their nightmare on the news. I literally gasped throughout every minute. Sometimes calling out involuntarily “no way!” I couldn’t put it down. It is so well written and compelling. I can’t believe what they went through. I’m still spinning from it. I don’t know how they got through it. It’s haunting and unnerving but in the end their resilience is inspiring and hopeful. This is an important book that teaches among many other things to be slow to judge our fellow humans. It sheds a lot of light on some of the major flaws in our criminal and legal systems as well as the way the media reports it all… I have a whole new perspective about how I form opinions from what I see in the media. I hope it catches fire and effects change for all the generations to come.

One of the most compelling and important books I’ve ever read
