Jonathon de Mountford’s visit to Merrychurch village to stay with his uncle Dominic gets off to a bad start when Dominic fails to appear at the railway station. But when Jonathon finds him dead in his study, apparently as the result of a fall, everything changes. For one thing, Jonathon is the next in line to inherit the manor house. For another, he’s not so sure it was an accident, and with the help of Mike Tattersall, the owner of the village pub, Jonathon sets out to prove his theory - if he can concentrate long enough without getting distracted by the handsome Mike.
They discover an increasingly long list of people who had reason to want Dominic dead. And when events take an unexpected turn, the amateur sleuths are left bewildered. It doesn’t help that the police inspector brought in to solve the case is the last person Mike wants to see, especially when they are told to keep their noses out of police business.

Seb Yarrick is really good here - he has a good range for English accents – from Mike’s slight country burr to the more polished accent for Jonathon (and all the others in between). He has distinct voices for the characters, so I always knew who was talking.
He definitely made this an easy, enjoyable listen, one I would listen to again.
Enjoyed it!

Clever, funny, wonderful characters, and a terrific mystery. Yep, KC Wells does cozy mysteries, bring on the next one!

The narration was one of the reasons I started this series so I hope there will be more narrated books.
Good story. Good narration.

Jonathan is a photographer from a rich, aristocratic family. He arrives in Merrychurch, a village in the English countryside, to visit his uncle Dominic. When Jonathan arrives at Merrychurch, he meets Mike, a medically retired police officer turned pub owner. Together, Mike and Jonathan discover Dominic’s dead body at the family estate, and from there the two of them spearhead their own investigation into the murder mystery.
For a retired police officer and supposedly one of the best detective inspectors at his old police department, Mike’s actions were completely irresponsible. Interviewing and interrogating people, barging into crime scenes, all these actions a good defense attorney would use to help throw evidence out in court. It’s not good enough to figure out a mystery, but you have to preserve evidence and follow procedures so that it can be used in court. I could forgive Jonathan for not knowing this, but Mike should know better. I don’t blame DI Gorland for being pissed at these two, I would want to throw them in a jail cell just to get them to stop messing everything up. They were both a menace to the investigation.
I don’t expect authors to be experts in police procedures, but if police procedures and investigations are the main theme of your book, I expect a certain level of realism. Nothing happens fast in a murder investigation, things have to be processed, people have to be consulted. The fact that this story seemed to have taken place all within a week, was strange. There was just so many questionable instances throughout this investigation, and honestly I would hate to be lawyer that would have to deal with this case in court.
K.C. Wells is a good writer, and she does create fabulous characters, which was the saving grace of this book. I think if she focused more on the characters and their interactions with each other and less on the investigation procedures, the book would have been so much better. I wanted more romance between Jonathan and Mike. Overall, I was disappointed with the book, and I will be staying away from the cozy mystery genre altogether.
The narration was well done and I enjoyed listening to Seb Yarrick's performance.
Disappointed
