Acerca de esta escucha

Most Christians are familiar with the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Five were wise, having prepared plenty of oil for their lamps. Five were foolish, having chosen not to prepare sufficient oil. This parable is directed specifically to members of The Church of Jesus Christ, and not to the world.

A key detail in this parable gets ignored or overlooked by almost everyone. We seem to miss the majesty and the urgency of trimming our lamps.

While it is vital to prepare and maintain abundant oil of personal conversion to Jesus Christ in our lamps, the additional attention to the detail of carefully and deliberately trimming our lamps is an increasingly urgent matter.

Oil of conversion includes making and keeping covenants with Heavenly Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ, beginning with baptism by proper priesthood authority. Priesthood authority is found only within Christ’s New Testament Church restored, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Oil of conversion includes the ongoing practice of daily repentance and being intentionally virtuous, and pleading with Heavenly Father to fill our souls with the pure love of Christ, charity toward all men (see Moroni 7:46-48).

But, what does it mean to trim our lamps? The wick in an oil lamp needs to be carefully trimmed in order to allow the oil to burn more efficiently, more effectively, and more brightly, giving more light while producing less soot and smoke.

Trimming the lamp means using a sharp instrument to cut off the frayed strands of the wick, and to cut the wick to an optimum length at a perfectly square angle.

Think about the rich, abundant symbolism in that simple yet often overlooked detail of trimming our lamps. Apply the sharp instrument of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ (see Isaiah 41:14-15; 54:16; Hebrews 4:12; Revelation 14:14-19).

Trim out of your life that which is disorderly, unnecessary, and of little or no eternal worth. Think Celestial. Ponder, with an eternal perspective, the distinction between what is good, better, and best in your life and in how you spend your time. What can you walk away from? Unless your plans are God’s plans for you, there is no more time for your plans. Jesus is coming soon! What do you want Him to find you doing?

What will enable you to more effectively shine your light of conversion? What can you cut from your life and from your schedule to allow the fire of your conversion, the fire of the covenants you made with God, to burn brighter and brighter? What can you cut out of your life to be square with God? Get square with Him, right now!
