Acerca de esta escucha

The scene is Amazonia, Ecuador, only 50 miles from the Columbian border, and FARC, one of the oldest and most deadly criminal gangs in history, is operating close by. An American woman in her early forties, attractive but alone, is on an eco-vacation in the same location. There are five other guests: Sergei and a fellow Serb and their translator, the three of them drinking vodka and smoking American cigarettes while looking the American woman up and down; two Belgium biologists, man and wife, who only speak French and a smattering of English.

The rainy season has just begun, and the next day Romulo, their local guide, announces he is taking them up the winding Cuyabeno River to show them the capuchin monkeys high in the trees, the caiman almost completely submerged along the banks, and if they are very lucky, the extremely rare bufeo, the Amazon pink river dolphin. On the way back, he promises they would clamour through the jungle, where, amidst the fallen limbs and the mélange of water, life, and mud, he would point out the minutia and the sacred. “Tomorrow will be a very special day, yes?” Romulo repeatedly says to the American woman, even as the man-made horrors that quickly catch up to them spin dangerously out of control.

This new novella by John Talisker is, in part, true. The characters are real, and the environment is described exactly, as are many of the events that unfolded, both planned and unplanned. It is ultimately about the fine balance that exists between life and death—drug cartels, weapon smuggling, lust and rape, murder and revenge—but it is mostly about the complexity as well as the duplicity of human nature, mirrored by the miracle of ever-changing and adapting life, whereby “survival of the fittest” doesn’t always hold true.

“There are many things you do not know, yes? The blackness in your heart, just like me, yes?” Romulo added quietly, addressing the American woman. “I show you. I show you if you let me—you listen and see.”
