 The idea for this book (updated edition now available) was initially conceived after I viewed the documentary, "The Paw Project", and became interested in researching the subject of declawing and the reasons this particular area of animal surgery was initially developed, and is offered to clients. Upon my discoveries about why cats are declawed, and the volume of veterinary studies on the detrimental effects of this surgery on cats, this body of work evolved from what was initially intended as a newspaper article, into this book. This book was written over a period of one year, and was edited by Dr. Jean Hofve, DVM - a veterinarian who has firsthand knowledge of the potential for complications of this surgery on cats. Sound medical information on declawing can be difficult to obtain - or even decipher if found - via a quick web search. What is readily available - at a click of a mouse - are websites advertising the declawing of cats presenting arguments in favor of this procedure that are mostly based on opinion rather than fact. Websites advertise declawing surgeries in such a manner that one may think it is very safe and has no risks and complications on pet health. Since any operation has risks, just like a person facing surgery wants to know all the facts prior to “going under the knife”, this book offers most all the facts a pet owner may want to learn prior to getting their cat declawed. I believe this book offers the reader a more thorough understanding on the whole subject of declawing. Animals have body structures that are integral parts of their anatomy and physiology, and only an understanding on these anatomical structures and how these relate to pet health can one better understand the implications of this operation on the health of cats.
