Swords of Haven brings together the first three novels in New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green's beloved Hawk & Fisher series:
Hawk & Fisher
A high-level city official is murdered during a dinner party and Hawk and Fisher have only a few hours to find the killer among the guests, including powerful spell-casters, cunning politicians, Haven royalty, and the victim's own wife.
Winner Takes All
Hawk & Fisher grapple with dark magics, devious politicians, and deadly assassins when they're assigned to protect James Adamant, a fiery young politician whose plan to root out Haven's corruption makes him very popular . . . as a target.
The God Killer
No one is safe in Haven, not even the Gods! When divine residents of the Street of Gods fall prey to a murderer, Hawk & Fisher must team up with an exclusive tactical unit to catch the killer before all hell breaks loose in Haven.

4 stars
Straight-up fantasy world whodunit. We have a locked room murder, an isolated house filled with suspects, and a twisty ending.
I like the characters; Hawk and Fisher partners in the city guard and in life are mostly reader insert characters, serving to interrogate the suspects and catch the murderer. But the suspects are varied in personality and history and all have their secrets.
The plot is pretty fair, with the twists signaled well enough that if you pay attention you can catch some or all. But the twists are still interesting enough to hold the reader's attention.
This was a short novel when it was published and the standard novel was much shorter than it is now, so it's a very quick read. Recommended.
Book 2, Winner Takes All
3 stars
The city of Haven is in the throes of an election and one of the candidates has been threatened with death. Captains Hawk and Fisher are assigned to protect the candidate. In Haven, politics is prosecuted with gloves off. Intimidation, assassination, and magic are all tools of the conflict.
The major parties in this race are buying thugs, votes, and allies as quickly as they can, and there are indications of trouble in the party of the threatened candidate. Hawk and Fisher must protect the candidate and uncover the plotters to ensure the election is fair ... enough.
Hawk and Fisher are largely forces of nature; this story is about the candidate, his friends and advisors, and the enemy candidate. The enemy is a caricature, but the other characters are drawn interestingly. The plot of the story provides opportunities for more information about the people and society of Haven, which are detailed enough to hold the reader's attention. Other than that, it's a rather rote adventure plot, with attacks (both physical and magical), kidnappings, and betrayals.
Not a bad little story, but too slight to be really memorable. Fun for all that.
Book 3, The God Killer
3 stars
The city of Haven has a street where all the temples of all the gods are. The street is probably the strangest in the city. And somebody has been killing gods.
Since that would cause significant unrest, it falls to Capts. Hawk & Fisher to solve the murders and stop the murderer.
As a murder mystery, it's not bad, with interesting suspects of a variety of types. And the mystery is treated fairly, with all the necessary information given to the reader. The climax of the mystery is a bit abrupt and unsignaled, though.
Entertaining enough, but nothing really special.
