Beautifully written story of an unfulfilled, joyless, life. Worth reading as a classic example of such a life and of the author's masterful ability to maintain the steady, unrelenting pace necessary to successfully evoke it. For me, I will remember it as a touchstone of these qualities.

The essence of measured restraint

The pace was so different from books being written today. Meditative and reflective, yet with a complex plot.

Sorrowful tale with only sad endings but memorable descriptions of early 20th century landscape, people and small towns in Irish countryside.

Elegiac story

Intimate yet with great scope and resonance - And narrated so well that the individual voice disappeared.

A beautifully written novel - intimate yet with great scope and resonance. Masterful.

While the narration was fine, nothing happened of interest in this story. I can not recommend it.

No story here - move on.
