Oxford, Spring - 1354.
When the series of accidents to the building of the chapel at Queen’s College begin, they do not appear a cause for concern, but they grow more serious, and stonemasons are injured. Nicholas Elyot becomes involved after it is discovered that an intruder has reached the college by way of his garden. When Jordain Brinkylsworth’s youngest student goes missing, it seems at first that his disappearance is unconnected, yet he is one of the ‘poor boys’ supported by Queen’s. Surely this serious and studious boy cannot be responsible for the troubles?
And then someone is killed.

This book met all my expectations and more. It was bittersweet reading, first, then listening to Philip Battley’s wonderful narration of the story.
All of the excitement, intrigue, and heartwarming storytelling she put into every book I’ve read by her, was present. She must have been an incredible lecturer because every one I’ve read, always teaches me something about Oxford during the 1500s, just after the pestilence. I swear she could make instructions for changing a flat tire interesting!! And this time it was building such structures as Churches, Castles and other large buildings.
Her characters came to life for me with every book — filled with excitement and intrigue. What a wonderful writer and gifted storyteller she was!!
If you love Medieval mysteries, like Cadfael, you’ll love Ann Swinfen ‘s books. Her enthusiasm for whatever time she was writing about came through time and again.
My heartfelt sympathy to her husband, family, and friends.
And my thanks to Ann Swinfen for sharing these wonderful tales with us.
