The Road to Chidarra is a Christian fiction novel based in an age when men worshiped at the altar of their cruel masters, the gods, and feared the monsters and strange beings who plagued their lands with malice and terror. The cries of the people are heard, and a stranger is sent from afar to guide, protect, and bring peace to the lands. This, however, comes at great cost, for the dark powers do not give in so easily, and the struggle for freedom always and forever shall be paved with blood and sacrifice.

The narrator for this book has a great voice, but he does not take breaths between sentences. He must have edited them all out. It took me awhile to get used to this, and interfered with being able to get into the story line itself.
This is a Christian fantasy and is actually several stories woven together. I starts out with The Prophet's quest and relates his adventures as he seeks to sow God's love and His justice among tribes and peoples who do not know God or the Prophet. The characters in each story are very imaginative and colorful. There was lots of action and drama. The stories carried urgency but also hope, and what seemed to start out as a dark and brooding story gained light and grace as it progressed.
Took me awhile but I really got into it

Narrator puts his heart into it but it has quality issues for me (some clipping could be my download but I don't think so).
The book is unusual, it's like a combination of the Lord of the rings and the bible. If the bible with hobbits and fantastical creatures and magic sounds like an interesting combination give it a shot! It does get a little dry at times but for the most part it's got an unusual combination of ideas and keeps it interesting.
Interesting idea but short.

There is lots of suspense, and the story itself has some real action-packed moments, but I struggled to keep myself involved. The writing style wasn’t one that I was used to and while others might enjoy it, I found it hard to connect to characters and to scenes because it comes across as an omniscient POV which in itself is interesting if you enjoy that type of style.

I’m looking forward to the author’s next release, which will hopefully continue this exciting journey.

The audiobook narrator was very good. He has a smooth, pleasant narration voice and a good assortment of character voices. He also has good control over tempo and vocal inflections.
Now, honestly, I liked the world the author built and I think the idea behind this story was a good one.
Unfortunately, the style he chose to write it in just didn't work for me.
I understood going into it that this was a Christian fantasy. So I expected Christian sensibilities and perhaps even Christian or Christian-eske religion and mythology.
What I didn't expect, was a book that reads like a parable.
The writing style feels like a cross between a 17th century fairy tale and a book of of the Old Testament Bible.
Not that this is inherently bad, it's just not a style I enjoy.
With that very high level omniscient narration, I really wasn't able to connect with any of the characters.
Further exacerbating the problem is the story's inability to decide if it was present tense or past. It kept switching back and forth. We ended up with lines such as, "David stands and looks, then he said..."
That inconsistency was extremely distracting.
Perhaps it's only that with the different frameworks in place I struggled to follow what was happening in the "now" and what was being told as a past event, but for me the ending seemed rather lackluster.
In the end, if you enjoy the super high level omniscient narration style of parables and old fairy tales, this might be exactly the thing you're looking for.
Interesting concept, but it didn't work for me.

The story had a bit of a slow start, but it crescendoed into a thrilling culmination. Feneer’s weariness at the start of the journey was palpable, but as the journey continues from land to land, people to people, the story becomes more and more riveting and gripping. Battles and attacks. Victories and defeats. Dark creatures and death. Sorrow and pain. Prophesies and praise.
By the time I got to chapter five, it was impossible to put down. There was a boar scene that had me glued!
The final battle was a difficult choice that required bravery, empathy, and unwavering belief from the protagonists. And that’s exactly what The Road to Chidarra inspired for me: hope, faith, and courage.
The prose was stunning and vivid, and transported me into a world where I could see, smell, feel everything. I could visualize every creature, every character, every landscape and atmosphere along the travel.
However, toward the end, this colorful prose devolved into all telling no showing, which was a bummer, since at this part of the story, showing would have been so much more enthralling.
I really like the narrator’s style of narration. It was rich and lurid, which did well to pull me into the story and keep me hooked.
There were several parts, however, that felt like never-ending run-on sentences, not on account of the writing, but because the narrator took no pauses in between sentences, and as a result, sounded rushed. It did take a bit to get used to, but it wasn’t all throughout the book and it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story.
Aside from a few hangups with the writing toward the end and the lack of pauses in the narration, I fully enjoyed this audiobook and look forward to reading more from the author.
