 This description is tough to write, because it's the twists and turns in the story that make it such a fun read. If they get spelled out in this description, to help motivate interest, then they will be spoiled when it comes down to reading it. Let's try the following, somewhat cryptic and skimp summary. A father brings his son to spend time at his parents' lighthouse. When they arrive, they discover that the grandparents are missing. A note declaring that they'd "be right back" is contradicted by groceries on the counter that have begun to spoil. Their efforts to find them, and even to leave for help, are thwarted at every turn. They begin to see mysterious lights and hear very disturbing sounds. Then things get very strange...in a way that would have made Rod Serling proud. (This story was originally published as, "Ordinary Magic.") Author's note: To date, this is my favorite of my short stories. I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, which was probably why it grew long enough to be called a "novella," rather than just a short story. If you like a story that carefully cruises from the ordinary deeply into the extraordinary, and hangs onto and promotes key family values along the way, this journey is for you.
