I thought it was really funny when he tried to outrun the courier. It reminds me of playing Skyrim and that damned courier literally trekking over mountains just to catch you! It was also a nice change to find a protagonist that didn't immediately recognize the monster and list off all the things he knows about it. Usually, protags are well versed in monsters from all over, so much so that it can be annoying. It was a nice change of pace to have a hero that had no idea what it was. It made him endearing, like he's not some all powerful being but someone human that can learn and grow despite his years as a knight.
I think my favorite scene was easily the first time he met the squirrel (I forget the name, I'm sorry!) It was such a cute, comical scene that I couldn't help but snort. I think that's when I knew this book was going to be amazing.
"And where is it now? Where is your treasure now?" "I don't know." "What?!" This is a friendship I can get behind, oh my god. I felt bad for Will but, at the same time, I couldn't help but laugh at his annoyance.
"Is this true, knight? Are you sir William Hornsby, the slayer of the whatever and the liberator of who knows where?" This author is so good at adding lines like this. They're so funny to me and they really make the story more enjoyable. I love the lighthearted tone it has while also delving into serious topics and battles.
And this might be my favorite line from the whole book:
[The phrase meant something like "nature's grace." It referred to the inevitability of death, of nature allowing you a break from the struggle of life.]
This book was amazing and it's the perfect pick-me-up that I really needed after a stressful few months. I'm excited for the next book, to learn more of this world and learn more about William. He's a great main character, someone I would love to be best friends with haha
I almost forgot to add that the narrator did a fantastic job, as well! His voice was very calming, but he portrayed the emotions of the characters well and his different voices were well done.
