It was written in 1826 and explores the themes of an obsessive 'idée fixe' of personal power and secular greatness vs. the true, lasting happiness which lies in the mystic depths of the human soul. This (partly true) story tells of one man's misguided assault upon God for the perceived injustices he suffers, and the consequences of that blasphemous challenge.
