The summer of 1899 is HOT in Calpurnia Virginia Tate's sleepy Texas town, and there aren't a lot of good ways to stay cool. Her mother has a new wind machine from town, but Callie might just have to resort to stealthily cutting off her hair, one sneaky inch at a time. She also spends a lot time at the river with her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist. It turns out that every drop of river water is teeming with life - all you have to do is look through a microscope!

As Callie explores the natural world around her, she develops a close relationship with her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and comes up against just what it means to be a girl at the turn of the century.

This was a delightful story about the love of family, nature, and life in general. I really enjoyed this story and the fun relationship between Grandfather and Granddaughter. Despite the name of the book evolution isn't use in it's typical argumentative state in this book. Rather it refers to the ever changing and evolving person we become as we grow and mature.

an interplay between an adolescent girl, and her family at the turn of the 20th century.

Story left me cold, and story never went anywhere.

Calpernia's story about the stereotypical traps girls have had to overcome through history and still struggle with today was moving. I hope it gives courage to those who struggle to find their "voice."

My daughter and I listen to this book on the way to school! She actually would get ready on time so we could listen to it in the parking lot before school.

Read this book because my daughter's school had it as recommended reading for her and I wanted to talk with her about it. I enjoyed it much more than most children's books. Simple and full of complex concepts that are essential in a transition. Especially meaningful to young girls!

I enjoyed this book but the story didn’t have many ups or downs but if you want a nice book to have in the background this is a good choice
