Acerca de esta escucha

When an abused bride, married against her will to a Barbary corsair captain, arrives at the only refuge for women in Algiers with her alleged husband’s two sisters, Lalla Hurriya must defend the women against the threat of attack. Will Chief Commissioner Muhammad save the only refuge for women in Algiers from destruction by the enraged Barbary corsair and his cutthroat crew?

Against the action that takes place between the contending parties, the story of the women inside the fortified hammam is told by Lalla Hurriya, recently pledged by her family to the Chief Commissioner, a man she barely knows. In telling her side of the story of resistance, Hurriya speaks openly of the double standards current in her society that are upheld by the law that her husband represents and enforces. In doing so, she tells the story not only of her relationship with the Chief Commissioner, but of the proud women in her country and the burdens they bear.

Told in the beginning chapters by the Chief Commissioner of the Hinterlands of Algiers and, in the final chapters, by his wife, two marriages of honor are brought into sharp contrast. One marriage of honor arranged by the bride’s family brings Chief Commissioner Muhammad and Lalla Hurriya together, albeit with reservations on the part of the bride. The other marriage of honor takes place after a woman’s family seeks to legitimize her abduction, thus sparing the family honor, by agreeing to marry her to the brute who snatched her from their home.

This is the seventh installment in the exciting Muhammad Amalfi Mystery series, the one that introduces readers to the heart and mind of a sagacious and courageous woman. Hurriya's founding of a refuge for abused women and her staunch refusal to be daunted by brute force introduces her to the series—and especially to Muhammad—as an equal and a most valuable ally.
