The Ancestors of Israel Glorify God A Poem Dedicated to the Heroes of the Faith glorifying God across history The roots of wisdom are found in the people of God and are mentioned in the Old Testament. Wisdom spread to all nations through the Incarnate Word of God, who offers wisdom and salvation to all humankind. It is only through union with the Lord Jesus Christ that we receive true wisdom, for He is the Incarnated Wisdom of God. He protects His believers from sin and grants them eternal life. Ben Sirach does not mention all the famous ancestors. Instead, he wishes to assert that every true believer has his personality and talents and potentials that God has granted him. He starts by mentioning the patriarchs mentioned in the Book of Genesis, beginning with Enoch, whose deeds are not known other than that he walked with God and was not found, because God had taken him (Gen. 5:24). Then Sirach moves on and selects heroes through history until he gets to the righteous Simon, the priest, who was his contemporary. This section ends with a poem of praise and prayer. ‘Let us now praise honored men and our fathers. The Lord established His great glory and majesty from the beginning through them’ (44:1-2). ‘Their bodies were buried in peace, and their name lives to all generations. People will tell of their wisdom, and the assembly will proclaim their praise’, (44:14-15). This poem is divided into four parts: 1. An introduction (44:1.15) 2. Followed by a large part focusing mainly on some of the fathers mentioned in the five books written by Moses, fathers with whom God made a covenant, such as Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Aaron (44:16- 45:26). 3. The third part is shorter than the previous one and presents some historical and prophetic figures of Israel, especially kings and prophets (46:1- 49:16). 4. The poem ends with praise of the high priest Simon son of Onias, followed by praise to God (50:22-24). A Variety of Heroes! One stands in astonishment and wonders: Does what is recorded in this last section of the Book of Wisdom of Sirach aimed to glorify those who fear the Lord and have attained sublime stature of heavenly glory, or is it aimed to glorify God who works in His saints? This magnificent procession mentions samples of heroes across the ages who have diverse talents to open the door of hope to each believer. At the same time, he refers to the exile as one of the fruits of stubbornness and rebellion towards God. 1. The Early Fathers: Enoch (44:16); Noah (44:17-18); dating from before the era before the patriarchs. 2. The Early Patriarchs: Abraham (44:19-21), Isaac (44:22), Jacob (44:23). 3. Moses, the prophet (45:1-5). 4. Aaron (45:6-22) 5. Phineas 45:23-26). 6. Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh (46:1-10) 7. Judges 46:11-12). 8. Samuel the prophet (46:13-20) 9. David, the King (47:1-11). 10- Solomon the King (47:12-22) 11. Rehoboam and Jeroboam (47:23-25). 12. Elijah the prophet (48:1-11 ) 13. Elisha the prophet (48:12-16) 14. Hezekiah the King (48:17-25) 15. Josiah, the King (49:1-3). 16. The kings of Judah and the exile to Babylon (49:4-7) 17. Ezekiel, the prophet (49:8-9). 18. The twelve prophets (49:10) 19. Zerubbabel (49:11). 20. Jeshua, the son of Jozadak (49:12) 21. Nehemiah (49:13). 22. Resumes mention the age of the fathers (49:14-16) 23. Simon, son of Onias, the contemporary of Ben Sirach (50:1-29) Biblias y Estudio de la Biblia Comentarios Cristianismo Estudio de la Biblia Sabiduría Moisés Rey Realeza
