I had a hard time with this one. The beginning of the book was very uneventful. I had a hard time sticking with it. The ending was better when the dragons finally entered.

A very interesting and exciting story. However it does leave you guessing what happens. As far as the narration goes I was very pleased with the narrator, she done a wonderful job bringing life to the characters. I would recommend this book.

I quickly found myself listening for longer than I had planned. That 'just one more chapter' kept me up longer than I planned. The narrator did a wonderful job giving g voice to each character.

Squire Derel (Knight Protector, Book 1), my thirteenth read from prolific author Rachel Ford and the first book in her Knight Protector series. A well-written & enjoyable book that takes off like a jet fighter from an aircraft carrier and only picks up speed from there. 8-hours 21-minutes of pleasurable reading. No matter the genre a Rachel Ford book can be counted on to be entertaining & enjoyable. I look forward to the next book in the series, Mountain Witch (Knight Protector, Book 2), Oh well, I have other Rachel Ford books to read. Lynne Ennis's narration makes a good book even better. Squire Derel takes place in a world where Elven magic, enchanted swords, and dragons meet self-propelled vehicles and energy guns, which is an interesting dichotomy. I enjoyed the story, although I had a bit of a "wait, when did the things develop enough for this?" moment when the relationship between Derel and the Knight Protector got more serious. The story is part of a series and the ending leaves you hanging a bit, making this part of the story feel unfinished, but I suspect we'll come back around to Derel and the KP later on.

I listened to the audiobook and Lynne Ennis did a great job with distinct voices for all of the characters, although her voice sounded older than I would have liked for some of them, particularly Derel herself. Overall it was a good performance, though.

I will say this was a good story and the only fault I have with it doesn't warrant me giving it a lower score. When listening to audio books I tend to prefer those that grab my attention from the start and keep my mind from wandering off. Unfortunately, because of the need to set the story up properly for the end, I often found my mind wandering for the first couple of chapters. I do feel that if I personally was reading it rather than listening, it would still have received a 5-star rating. I mean how many times does one hear discombobulate in a story and more than once.

Squire Derel is a fantastic blend of action, heart, and fantasy that had me hooked from the very beginning. Rachel Ford has crafted a compelling world filled with rich characters, sharp dialogue, and a plot that moves at just the right pace. Derel is a refreshingly relatable protagonist—flawed and fiercely determined—and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way.

Lynne Ennis brings the story to life with a narration that’s both dynamic and emotionally resonant. Her performance adds depth to the characters and enhances the storytelling in a way that makes the audiobook truly immersive.

This is a strong and entertaining start to the Knight Protector series, and I can’t wait to dive into the next installment. Highly recommended for fans of sci-fi, adventure, and character-driven stories!

This story was amazing! It starts fast and keeps going from there! The story is well written and keeps your attention from start to finish. The narrator did a good job with the range of the performance. I am glad I get up early everyday because I was able to listen to this in one shot and I didn’t miss a thing. I kept jumping because of the unexpected turns the story took, some things you know will happen and others jump out and bite you.
