As this compilation is split into 3 distinct sections, I’ll do the same with my review. I’m also still listening to the book, but I wanted to post my thoughts as I go. I’ll update my review as I finish sections.

The Ixan Prophecies trilogy hooked me from the start with its blend of backstabbing, double-dealing, corruption, and military sci-fi theme. The trilogy delivers a gripping narrative centered on humanity’s dominance in a volatile galaxy. It poses the question: What does humanity do with its place atop the galactic food chain? Bartlett weaves real-world political parallels, such as bribery, unlimited campaign donations, and leaders thoughts (or lack thereof) on accountability for long-term consequences, into the narrative seamlessly, never feeling forced. It was interesting to follow Captain Keyes’ moral struggle throughout this trilogy as well.

Bartlett's Mech Wars puts itself in a challenging position by shifting focus to the villains from the previous book, making it difficult to muster sympathy for the characters. However, he maintains the high-stakes atmosphere, continuing the themes of backstabbing, espionage, and plotting from the Ixan Prophecies. The books excel in their stompy robot action and introduce a unique concept: using lucid dreaming for military training and piloting mechs. While I enjoyed the stories and found them engaging, there are a few issues with military terminology that I found distracting. Firstly, the use of "seaman apprentice" as a rank is inconsistent with the US Navy's actual hierarchy, and it's unlikely that someone at this rank would be trusted to pilot advanced mechs. Additionally, the term "nicknames" is used instead of "callsigns," which is the standard term used in the military. It's worth noting that a callsign like “Razor” would never be chosen for someone’s skill in battle; however, a person may earn a callsign like "Razor" due to a shaving accident before a promotion ceremony. Lastly, Bartlett occasionally mixes up the terms "clip" and "magazine," which might be distracting for readers familiar with firearms terminology. However, it's possible to assume that the corporate military in this fictional universe uses terms differently.

Mark Boyett’s narration of the Ixan Prophecies trilogy and Mech Wars quadrilogy is exceptional, as always. He uses distinct voices and accents for each character to really bring the story to life. I’m looking forward to listening to Ixan Legacy.

Okay, so I am reviewing this after being given the box set for review. I did not pay for it.

I really enjoyed the first three books. Solid villains, good character building, emotional tension was just right and it was overall solid and enjoyable.

Mech Wars? It was okay. Kind of a slog to get through at times, especially with Roach, but it was a decent story even if...all the main characters are not good people. I might have enjoyed it more if I had taken a break between the first trilogy and Mech Wars.

Ixen Legacy: I nearly DNF'd just for one plot hole the size of a carrier group. Here it seems Bartlett lost the plot. The ultimate villains? Both lame AND a major plot hole that just gets handwaved away. The internal politics? Laughably trite in trying to play a moderate. Set up badly and unrealistically, caricatures of political points from the university students OR big bad "leftist" tyranny from people corrupted by aliens rather than looking at politics through a mirror.

First three books are good, next four books are okay, final three are...tolerable

I went into this looking for something to keep me company during long drives, and it ended up being way more enjoyable than I expected. Ten full books is no small commitment, but the story kept me coming back.

The best part? The characters. Captain Keyes isn’t your typical sci-fi hero—he’s older, a little worn down, and stuck with a crew that’s more oddball than elite. But that’s what makes it feel real. They don’t always get it right, and the stakes feel earned.

There’s plenty of action—big space battles, mechs, alien threats—but it never felt like empty noise. Even in the middle of the chaos, the story still circles back to the people involved. A few parts dragged a little here and there, but nothing that made me want to stop.

Mark Boyett absolutely nails the narration. He gives life to a wide cast of characters without it sounding forced or overdone. Easy to follow, with just enough flavor to keep things interesting.

If you’re looking for a mix of military sci-fi, character drama, and some genuinely fun worldbuilding, this box set delivers. Great value for the amount of story you get.

Scott has created a complex universe with memorable human characters as well as notable alien races and characters. There is a great deal of exciting military action, with space and planetary battles featuring warships as well as Mech jockeys! This amazing collection of 10 complete novels, wonderfully performed by the excellent Mark Boyett, will take you on a memorable journey through Scott’s marvelous universe. I enjoyed it immensely!

I will say right off that I have not finished all 10 books yet. I will come back and change this if it ends strongly. The story is pretty generic. I like that there are lots of aliens that are nonhumans, but it is fairly predictable so far. The narration is very good though, so I will keep listening to it. It is definitely a great value for the amount of book you get for your money.

Boyett nailed the narration, I think he is really underrated. This series had me really surprised at how he performed different characters.

How do you rate a book this long? Sometimes I found myself slogging through it. I'll simplify it with what I liked and didn't like.

The bad-( nothing terrible) I wish there was more character development. There were a few characters that I rally like and wanted more of their backstory. I felt the writing got bogged down with additive during war scenes. Either my mind or the plot tended to meander. This may need better editing?

I really liked some of the alien species. They were unique in syfy and Boyett portrayed them really well. Space combat and travel must be hard to write and be original. But some of it was.

This is my honest review.

Good story, excellent narration
