Outcast and exiled, the demon Tarrik Nal-Valim has long been forgotten by the world of humans. At least, so he thinks. But when he is summoned as a last resort by a desperate sorcerer, it seems as though his past has caught up with him.

As their world sinks into a terrifying maelstrom of murder, intrigue, and insurrection, Tarrik is forced to serve Ren’s arcane designs - plans that, if they were to succeed, would resurrect unimaginable power and could destroy Tarrik’s entire race.

But as events unfurl, the lines between demon and master become blurred, and Tarrik realizes Ren is not what she seems. To prevent utter devastation, Tarrik may have to surrender what he values most: a chance at redemption and an end to his exile.

This story was great and the narrator’s voice is nice too, but holy crap, did anyone pay attention to his performance before release? SO many mispronounced words make it one cringe moment after the next. Yikes. I’ll be avoiding books by this performer in the future, while looking for more by this author (as long as they’re performed by someone else)

I was expecting a mediocre fantasy/fiction novel. I am amazed at how the author gives us another insight into demons -- which is within the realm of reason. I care about these characters and often think of them when not listening.

I am on the second book and the series is getting more intriguing with more depth in the plot and characters.

Highly recommended. I do hope these characters will make it to subsequent books.

Much Better Than I Expected

Narrative told from Tarrik's (the exiled, higher demon) point of view. What I loved about the story was it being set in the same world as "Revenant Winds", but a few hundred years earlier on a different continent, to start with anyway. There's so many little tidbits to be learned about this amazing world Hogan has created like the Tainted Cabal, demons hierarchy (weaknesses and strengths), Nysrog's top general Samal, the Evokers and the concepts used by sorcerers, making it very useful background material for other Hogan books. (also ties in with the ARC of "Incursion", that I'm reading now)
Tarrik is summoned by Ren, one of the Tainted Cabal to be used for whatever secret mission she has planned. Most of the story, his main objective is to kill Ren to break the bonds she has put on him and return to his home. Ren seems very cold in nature, and hard to understand til maybe halfway through the book. Tarrik on the other hand is a demon with a demon way of thinking most of the time, but with a softer side, making him the more likable of the two. She has a single objective for most of the book, dragging Tarrik from one place to the other on a sorcerers disc. The two find themselves in trouble at every turn, so there's never a dull moment and Tarrik gets to prove his worth. The build up is worth the wait for the epic conclusion to this tale and thankfully you don't have to listen to 20 hours to get there.

Shadow of the Exile is an enjoyable tale that follows a typical narrative.

The story does not subvert expectations and is typical of the genre.

The narrator’s ignorance of what is taking place adds to the story.

This is a book I would recommend.

Definitely not a book I'd recommend if you have other options but if there's nothing else and you really need something then fine but don't expect much.
The idea is ok, maybe even good however, it was not written very well. Unless you don't have a lot of books in your library or suck at figuring things out this book will annoy you with its repetitive inner monolog. the mc and his personal moral issues that you could care less about. then he gets over it for little to no reason. did I mention the repetitive inner monolog? like throughout the whole book? "I AM DEMON OF BLAH BLAH, NO ONE TELLS ME WHAT TO DO" as he's ordered about like the slave he totally is.
idk, it's short enough and the story is JUST interesting enough that I finished it and the ending left just enough intrigue to get me curious about the next book. ONLY If I'm completely out of options though

Hogan certainly did it again in this riveting sequence that started with his Revenant Series. I love that this book was written from a non traditional character pov. After Revenant, the readers wonder how things will turn out for the future and Mitchell doesnt disapoint. I loved the world building, going through great fight scenes, never felt a dull moment. There was a little bit of something for everyone here. Intriguing magic system, a bit of a mystery trying to be solved with the overall main character and his relationship to the mistress and what her intentions are, adventure, touch of romance. Such a great story, cant wait for the next one if he gets to continue the series, and the ending I especially loved! I did not expect it to end the way that it did and I read a LOT of fantasy.

I so loved this book! it is well written, has a great story that is still easy to follow, and just as importantly, it hits the ground running and doesn't stop! I love the lack of boring "down time". That's not to say it's non-stop action (it isn't), rather it's "lean and mean" without unnecessary filler. The narrator is also absolutely top-notch and I hope to hear more from him. Looking forward to the sequel!!

The overall concept of the book was good, but I really couldn’t get into the 2 main characters. You don’t really get to know anything about Ren and Tarrik has huge potential that seemed to go now where.
