Acerca de esta escucha

Three pilgrims and travelers from widely different backgrounds make their way toward the headwaters of the Ganges River searching for renewal and spiritual awakening. Jagdish, an illiterate peasant, has always dreamed of visiting holy places in the Himalayas. Sovik, an Indian American scientist, seeks renewed life purpose after a traumatic health crisis. And Larry, a financial analyst, wants adventure as he recovers from a failed love affair; he falls in love with the vivacious Indian tour guide. Their paths cross at the temple near the source of the Ganges and they stumble upon a plot to steal the temple’s gold. The shrewd robbers hatch their intriguing plan in broad daylight by exploiting the weakness of a senior priest of the temple. Chance meetings, romance, history, secret code numbers, and spirituality all play a part in bringing the robbers to justice – although no shots were fired. All are forever transformed. For some the novel is a mystery, a gold heist; for some it is a travelogue, a hike to the Himalayas; for others, it is a spiritual adventure, a pilgrimage, a conversation with monks. The first story describes the life struggles of an illiterate farmer, his devotion to spirituality, his longings for a pilgrimage, and finally his travels to the Gangotri temple. In the second story, an Indian charity organization with the goal of uplifting the poor people of India is unable to raise enough money for their expanding programs. In desperation, Mr. Chetti, their CFO devises a plan to steal gold from the Gangotri temple, which he believes has hidden it for centuries. A senior monk of the temple is drawn in to participate by flattery and false promises. Mr. Chetti convinces himself, along with an assistant, that the end justifies the means. The third story is about a man whose family fell from high standing in what is now Bangladesh, to refugee status in Calcutta, as a result of the Partition of India by the British to create India and Pakistan. Following his father’s dream, he comes to the U.S. for fortune and glory. He succeeds, but then experiences a mid-life crisis and depression. He journeys to the source of the sacred Ganges River, searching for peace and renewal. Several Americans join him: his wife, a Navajo boy, a young Mormon woman, and Larry, a somewhat flaky, but resourceful, American man who is intrigued by the strange things he observes as he falls in love with their beautiful Indian guide. While events unfold as monks, pilgrims, thieves, and tourists confront their own demons in the Hindu temple, Larry decides to investigate and dares to go after unknown thieves. The day-to-day life of ordinary villagers, lofty goals, desire for fame, romance, and cultural nuance supply fuel to the story. On the surface, the action centers on the treasure heist – but underneath, this is a story of a quest for peace in life nurtured by Indian mythological and folk tales, unconditional spiritual devotion, and intercultural romance. They weave a colorful tapestry of overlapping stories. As little tributaries flow together to make a mighty river, each thread in the tapestry is woven to make a beautiful picture with an uplifting conclusion.
