Jim Garrett and Andy Grimes are ready to graduate from the University of Santa Clara. They have completed four years of R.O.T.C. and, along with their diplomas, will be commissioned as officers in the United States Army.

The first order they receive is to report to the Letterman Army Hospital in the Presidio to undergo a physical check.

Reporting to the hospital early, both are given quarters in the B.O.Q. Andy parks his graduation present, a 1950 Chevrolet two-door sedan, in front of his quarters.

A night visiting San Francisco’s night life on the 4th of July appears to be a good way to celebrate their new lieutenant gold bars as well as the first step as commissioned officers. The celebration results in a need for Andy to go to the hospital as an inpatient.

Jim has to proceed by himself. What will become of Andy? Are the officer casualties significant enough to call for Jim to be thrown into the battle on the Korean peninsula? Will the armistice be signed in time for Jim to avoid combat? All these questions roil Jim’s mind aa he receives orders to take a M.A.T.S flight to Japan.
