How much does justice weigh?

Samuel Woodward, a mild-mannered African American, sits on death row for the murder of a prominent white bigot and racist. Born into poverty and raised in the harsh Jim Crow South during the 1940s, his crime has been dubbed the “crime of the century.” The scales of justice have tipped, and Sam is walking the green mile, awaiting execution. Ginny Sosebee, a white Southern journalist for The Washington Truth, believes Sam is innocent and sets out to prove it.

Ginny’s investigation into Sam’s past reveals the emotional toll of years of racial discrimination and abuse inflicted by white supremacists, overseers, politicians, and those filled with spiritual delusions, setting off a series of events, including the deaths of two siblings and the blinding of another, leaving the Woodward family filled with disbelief and bitterness, and a brother bent on revenge.

Amid her investigation, Ginny grapples with her own burden: guilt over her brother Hack’s accident and repercussions of family secrets, lies, and unspoken truths.
