Social media and politics have become the soul of society. Without both, we’d feel lost. Because of websites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the growing number of other social sites, socializing and interaction have become as simple as a status update, a like or comment, and a beautiful picture. News and politicians use social media to keep society up to date with news coverage, polls, political campaigns, and to share ideas they may wish their viewers to adopt. Although social media has become the go-to for getting tasks done or accessing information, its misuse contains many consequences that affect our overall health and perception of the world around us.
Without proper management, like any other addiction, social media can become harmful to yourself and damaging to the interpersonal relationships you have. But our need, our craving to stay up to date with information and connected to the world, does not have to control our lives. We can control our lives by controlling our social media habits, whether limiting screen time or removing social media from our lives entirely.
The birth of social media has led to a widespread explosion in the need for connectedness, business management, politics, and overall mental health. Because social media plays a vital role in society’s day-to-day activities, it is important for users to understand the pitfalls they present. While social media has become increasingly beneficial for politicians and political groups, social media can become an addictive piece of technology where its misuse can negatively impact self-love.
With social media benefits such as universal connectedness, learning a new skill, entertainment, and business and marketing, anyone can fall victim to cyberbullying, body-shaming, confirmation bias, fake news, and addiction.
