Welcome, teacher and student, to this most exciting educational course! Have you ever wondered how accurate Bible translation is achieved? What elements are involved in this vital process? This author has made such a study into the essentials of Bible translation possible in order that you may develop the vital skills of understanding Bible translation. No doubt you have wished to know more regarding the original Greek of the “New Testament.” Notice the title of this publication: PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES OF BIBLE TRANSLATION. Let us explain each of these. The first is a principle. What is a principle as define in this type of study? Note: PRINCIPLE: A rule or standard by which a basic truth is identified. Hence, we will be examining particular “rules” or standards of grammar, which will assist us in making an accurate and unbiased evaluation of words and phrases in the Koine Greek text. Of course, rules are generally flexible, so while they may apply more firmly in one case, they are nonetheless more adaptable in other instances. The second is technique. How would we define technique, and how vital is it to accurate Bible translation? TECHNIQUE: The systematic procedure by which a complete task or project is accomplished. Context is a key factor in determining the intent of the Bible writer. So, using this technique will greatly contribute to the proper understanding of the Scriptural text under consideration. In addition, the translator must be familiar with the manner in which that principle is generally applied throughout the entire “New Testament.” Principles commonly follow a general pattern and remain within a specific parameter of grammatical guidelines. There are exceptions, of course, but what you see at a particular text in Greek usually will be what you will find throughout the “New Testament.” Another technique is quite simple. Be familiar with how the word or the subject is taught all through the Holy Scriptures. After all, this is how millions of honest Bible lovers throughout the centuries have come to believe, in part, the concepts they hold so dear. Most of them did not know the original languages of the Scriptures. Nevertheless, they cherished the truths the Bible contains in their own language. So, be familiar with how a particular subject or word is incorporated in their many locations in the “New Testament.” Of course, there are various senses of a word, or one similar in meaning. So be perceptive and identify which word, in English, for instance, will be best suited for a particular Bible text. Your studies will help you to comprehend the presence and the absence of the definite article as found at John 1:1; the “rule” concerning the articular infinitive at Philippians 2:6, the actual meaning of terms like theotes as located at Colossians 2:9; and how ego eimi is not confined in meaning to “I am.” You, of course, will be discovering other principles and techniques as you make good use of this guide through your understanding and accurately translating Bible Greek. It will give you a deep sense of satisfaction that you are endeavoring to transmit the pure written Word of God faithfully into your native language.
