"The Chalet" is a Christian, rural, coastal resort community where middle to older age adults go to support several summer volunteer projects. These projects include building and improving housing for the needy and serving through the community’s action agencies. Those who volunteer, support each other's spouse losses and other challenges as they work to help the community. Romantic relationships are developed as those who stay become long-standing friends and soon-to-be lovers.

Bea has long believed that giving back and providing servant leadership at Barco Bay was her calling. A large portion of her job was to screen visitors to ensure they could meet the current needs of the community. She has never been one focused on her own needs, but when an old friend comes to town feeling empty and awash in a sea of grief, things take a major detour in her goals.

Maddox has been feeling lost in his grief and awash with guilt over where his life has landed. He has tried to be a long-standing, church-going, loyal husband, yet he ended up empty-handed and alone. He was wallowing in a pool of self-loathing and depression, until the moment he saw the advertisement for legal support for Bea's summer volunteer initiative. He can't explain what would possess him to show up without warning after all these years, but the results are shocking.
