"The first chance I got, I bought my very first bag of crystal methamphetamine... A monster was born. Try as I might, there is simply no way for me to minimize the impact with which crystal meth slammed into my life, at least not without straying far from the truth. It was like throwing a forty-pound sledge hammer though a plate glass window. What a cunning thing this was that lived inside of me. How could I ever hope to win against it? My good intentions meant nothing what I lacked was power."
Meth Monster is the autobiographical story of one gay African American man's personal journey to faith and deliverance from drugs and alcohol, and particularly from the scourge of crystal methamphetamine. The author takes his readers through his troubled early years in Indiana, hustling on the streets of Hollywood, and dealing drugs in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Blaine boldly examines his personal demons from the time they take up residence in his subconscious and through their horrific and destructive manifestations. After numerous visits to jails, prisons and rehab, and after finally confronting his addiction, his sexuality, AIDS and a broken spirit, at last he finds redemption, healing and forgiveness through the grace and mercy of The Living God.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
This book was not at all what I expected. It was about the life of Timothy Blaine and it did include the down and gory details that one would expect from an autobiography with this title. The theme of consistent and continual presence of how God brought him from beginning to end was ever present throughout the book. In his first paragraph Blaine states that this is his testimony so I should have not been surprised.
Books like these usually tell all the gory details and then spend a minute or two on redemption at the very end of the book. This difference, to me, was profound and it made me think about things-mainly, my preconceived ideas. However, listening to the way it is written I forgot about some of the very strong opinions and just felt what the author wrote. A testimony from a unique perspective.
I really, really liked and appreciated Jay Prichard's narration. He made me feel what he was reading, even though this topic is almost completely foreign to me. I did speed it up a little bit, to 1.25 X because I prefer to 'listen bit faster.' Prichard's performance/voice is very soothing. He is a good storyteller and a real professional. Keeping me engaged in a topic I wouldn't normally listen to.
Note: There is NOTHING graphic, but there are descriptions of drug and alcohol use, prostitution & gay lifestyle
Credit worthy/$: *I was asked to listen to this book in exchange for my review.* This is not a topic I would pick out on my own, but I feel I am a better person for reading it. It is pretty powerful. It is a short book just over 3 1/2 hours so I would not use a credit for it and the price tag is a little bit high for such a short book, in my opinion.
