In 1899 Elizabeth (Bessie) Dalton was severely burned, while ironing her clothes. Once recovered, rumors of her scarring brought unwanted attention and she remained in the house unless accompanied by her mother. After three years of feeling trapped in her home she jumped at the chance to start a new life away from her hometown. She accompanies her friend and neighbor, Betsy Weaver to Auburn, Washington.
After settling there, she wants a life that will allow her to be outside and decides to open a lending library built on a wagon. This leads to her taking her library to schools where more children can have exposure to books. Her library receives success with students and adults alike.
Billy Baker, Hazon Radford’s farm manager, not only builds the wagon for her, he also lays out the routes and accompanies her on her runs. He fell in love with the girl, now known as Liz, when he shows her how to cast a fishing rod and she falls into the water and comes up laughing.
