This is exactly what happens to 60-year old pacifist Klaus Bloederwitz before he returns to East Germany in 1989 and finds himself with severe burns in a hospital bed. Shaken and traumatized by his guilt, he is soon arrested by the Stasi secret police and interrogated by the vicious, Nazi-baiting, female K.G.B. officer, Colonel Medvedev.

Piece by painful piece, she digs up the darkest secrets of Klaus´s family and friends and the ghastly truth of their Nazi pasts, including one of Adolf Hitler´s and Heinrich Himmler´s profanest secrets of all.

At the same time that the East German government is crashing and the entire country seems to be about to descend into unbridled chaos, Klaus is left wondering who or what to believe – Colonel Medvedev or his three friends or even his own traumatized memories of his life – whilst finding himself spiraling ever further down within an international web of espionage.
