Tommy Buttertin is different from the other kids in Griddle-earth. He does not talk. He might not look you in the eyes, and he relies on structure and routine to get through the day. But like his brother, Chris, and most other kids, he’ll do almost anything for a tall stack of pancakes smothered in sweet, gooey syrup.
Tommy and Chris share a dream: to become knights, just like their father. When King Greasworth invites Chris to begin training for knighthood, the brothers are overjoyed, until the king informs them that Tommy does not have the strength to be a knight. Chris knows Tommy is just as capable and brave as any knight could be. He just needs a chance to prove it to himself and to everyone else.
Tommy’s chance arrives more quickly than expected when an Ice Dragon threatens their city, Stove’s Landing. With the help of I-doll and Chris, Tommy must travel to the edge of Griddle-earth, save the kingdom, and prove himself once and for all.

The story is really cute, showing an autistic boy and his big brother without outright SAYING he's autistic. It's not even the Thing. It's just part of his character. I really appreciated that! Add in a live wooden doll, dragons, snowstorms, and a forgetful giant, the whole story is just fun to listen to.
What really makes it for me, though, is the narrator. And, being this is an audiobook, that is a very important factor. Nathan Gilleland seems to be pretty new (I looked up more books by him, and there are some, yay!) but I really, REALLY hope he does more! He added little sound effects here and there, not so many that it became distracting or annoying, but just the right amount to make whatever was happening come alive. His pacing is good, his inflection really makes him fun to listen to - and the icing on the cake are his VOICES.
Each character has a clear voice, from Tommy to Chris to their mom to the wooden doll, to the giant, to each dragon, to the evil queen. They were each distinct and consistent from beginning to end, and so, so good! (a funny comment, but I appreciate how well he did the mother's voice. Female voices tend to be hard for male narrators, but he did it really well.) Halfway through I realized that I could picture each character and what was going on as if I was watching a movie in my head, and that for me is a good tell as to the quality of a) the story and b) the narrator.
I have to say, my favorite was I-doll. Something about the things he says and the voice the narrator gave him just cracks me up every time. :-)
Anyway, all in all an absolute delight! I am absolutely hooked, and will be looking for more from both this series AND this narrator.
If you have kids, this is perfect. We'll be listening to it on the car ride to the 4th of July get together!
*edit: just saw that there is a SECOND book. Will be getting it asap! :-)
