 The whole plan of salvation—justification, sanctification, and glorification—finds its beginning, power, and fulfillment in Jesus Christ alone. He is not merely the initiator or the example of salvation; He is the foundation, the means, and the goal of it. The Christian life is not a self-improvement program or moral journey apart from Christ—it is a divine work accomplished in Him, through Him, and unto Him. Every stage of salvation is rooted in what Christ has done, is doing, and will do for the believer.
Justification in Christ Alone
Justification is the first stage in salvation, and it is based entirely upon the finished work of Jesus Christ. The sinner is declared righteous before God, not because of anything he has done, but because of what Christ accomplished on the cross. In His death, Jesus bore the wrath of God against sin. He took our guilt, our punishment, and our judgment upon Himself as our substitute.
Romans 3:24–25 says, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood.” This means that Jesus Himself is the propitiation—the atoning sacrifice who satisfies God’s justice so that mercy may be extended. It is in His blood, not our performance, that we are justified.
Paul makes this even clearer in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Justification is not earned; it is imputed—Christ’s righteousness is credited to us by grace through faith. It is Christ’s perfect life and atoning death that form the only ground for the believer to stand accepted before God. Apart from Him, there is no justification.
Sanctification Through Christ Living in Us
Sanctification, the ongoing work of becoming holy and Christlike, is also centered in Christ. We do not sanctify ourselves through human willpower or religious discipline alone. Sanctification is the work of the indwelling Christ through the Holy Spirit, transforming the believer into His image. As Paul says in Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”
The believer is called to walk in obedience, to crucify the flesh, and to pursue holiness—but this is only possible through union with Christ. Jesus is not only the model of holiness; He is the source of the power to walk in holiness. John 15:5 says, “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
Sanctification flows from being “in Christ.” The believer’s new life is not self-generated; it is the life of Jesus being lived out through them. The Spirit of Christ works in the believer to renew the mind (Romans 12:2), produce spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22–23), and conform the heart to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). It is Christ who sanctifies His people by His truth (John 17:17) and His presence (Hebrews 13:20–21).
