James Monroe: A Biography examines the life of the fifth president of the United States. James Monroe promoted growth at a time when the advancement of the young United States had slowed down.

This brief but thorough biography by author Steven Wallace covers Monroe’s life - from his birth into a wealthy family until his death. This biography also discusses Monroe’s feud with Thomas Jefferson, his battle alongside George Washington, and his many other friendships with well-known historical figures.

Monroe spent eight years as president and 50 years overall as a politician. He experienced many successes, but he also had some failures. Monroe would often face rejection and controversy during his political career, but these incidents would only prepare him to win the election to become the fifth president of the United States of America.

Steven Wallace does a fine job of quickly conveying relevant and interesting facts about this American statesman and president. This is the first time I have listened to one of his many historical biographies. James Monroe is a more interesting than I expected. Learning about his service to our country, his various political appointments, and his perseverance in light of many setbacks and inevitable political disappointments was very illuminating. The telling of the story was so interesting I was wishing for more as the book ended. Thomas Rode added just the right tone for the listener to respect and enjoy his telling of Monroe's impressive life.

Excellent narration, along with an interesting glimpse back to the issues in that era of time. Along with giving us a look at these founders who became leaders. Well done and enjoyed.
