Acerca de esta escucha

From Nick Roberts, the best-selling author of The Exorcist's House and Anathema, comes fifteen dark tales that are as horrific as they are moving.

Witness absolute evil in “Sally Under the Bed” and “It Haunts the Mind.” Endure vengeance and violence in “The Noose” and “The Bitter End.” Face the realities of addiction and grief in “Thanks for Sharing” and “The Weeping Wind.”

Survive otherworldly monsters in “The Paperboy” and “Voodoo Bay.”In balancing the terrors of the supernatural with the horrors of real life, this collection drags you down the dark alleys of a haunted mind, forcing you to confront your demons, both real and imaginary.

“Come for the horror, stay for the heartbreaking emotion that bleeds into every page. Roberts really shows his range here, and it’s obvious early on in these stories that they will stick with you long after reading them. It Haunts The Mind is that damn good.”—John Durgin, author of The Cursed Among Us and Inside The Devil’s Nest.

“Nick Roberts has an uncanny ability to scare the bejesus out of readers. With It Haunts the Mind & Other Stories, he does it time and time again. Highly recommended if you don’t want to sleep in the dark again.”—James Aquilone, Bram Stoker Award-nominated editor and writer of Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker - 50th Anniversary

I actually preordered a paperback of this, but I’ve been too busy to get to it. The author very kindly sent me over an audible code, so I was able to fit it in sooner. Sadly there is a short story where you are not supposed to say the rhyme out loud so now I am unfortunately cursed. Alex Schiffer does a pretty solid job with narration though.

This collection features 15 short stories, some of which have been published elsewhere before, but were entirely new to me. One of the cool things about them being from other anthologies is that you are getting a slew of locales and types of horror in this single collection, nothing reads as one note.

My personally favorite was Percepto! not only in its shock value, but also for the classic Vincent Price. A close runner up was Sally Under the Bed, which to me felt almost like Hendrix’s Ankle Snatcher but from a younger perspective and somehow even creepier.

Naturally, I’m really here to talk about It Haunts the Mind. The collection’s namesake, but also a short story from the world of The Exorcist’s House (which I absolutely loved). I believe this fits somewhere within the opening of the novel and the family moving into the vacated house. Three teens plan to get drunk and look around. They’ve heard rumors, but they aren’t scared. Fans will see a familiar face, and be haunted by a familiar, foul-mouthed presence. With it being short it doesn’t quite hit the same level of creepy, but I enjoyed the extra layer in background.

Personally a 4.5/5*.

LOVE short story collections. This one was totally different than any I’ve read. The title It Haunts the Mind is the absolute perfect name for this book. It had all I love in horror books and then some. It had monsters of all types, including human and substances. I grew up in a household with substance abuse issues and I will tell you those memories haunt my mind more than any horror movie or book I’ve ever read. These stories were beautiful, ugly, moving and terrifying. BRAVO and thank you for this collection!

These stories will HAUNT YOUR MIND FOR MONTHS!

It’s difficult to tell a good short story but Nick Robert’s does a great job! I enjoyed every single one.

Narrator was phenomenal. The author really showed range with this collection. Many of these stories go past the horror to deep and haunting. They will live with me for a while.

I liked all the stories. This one is worth the read. The very first story scared the sh** out of me.

I love this book! New fan here, took a chance on this anthology since I'm a huge fan of horror anthologies. These stories have an author in common but that's about all. Lots of variation in the stories here, unlike some books that just feel monotonous. The only critique I have, and it's negligible, is about the end of each story. The flow from one story to the next is very confusing because there's not much of a break. The final line of one story will be read and immediately says the title of the next without no differential between the two. More than once, I hadn't realized a new story had started until a few minutes in 😆

Varied stories with no misses!

A narrator can make or break even a great story. And there are some stories in here that I think I would have enjoyed more if not for how they were narrated. He was only just a little better than Virtual Voice. I would even go so far as to say that were it not for VV’s occasional pronunciation errors, you might not always be able to tell the difference between it and this narrator. I delve into horror to escape “real life”. So I wasn’t really feeling the society/cultural stories relating to drug use. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the “Visitor” story was, how do these youngin’ say, “Gucci” (?). But the other two that come to mind lacked a monster/villain that I could identify.

There are some good stories here, but

There were more “misses” than “hits” in this collection of stories but that’s probably because I loved his full length novels so much that I hold the bar high. There were some really amazing stories here “The Noose” and “Sally Under the Bed” are good examples - but a lot of the stories just seemed to rehash themes from previous ones. I’m still a fan of the author but many of these just weren’t memorable enough

Not his best but decent
