Klune did it again, idk why I keep reading these books… oh I do, they’re super good, but boy another depressing one. Made me cry a lotttt this time. Great narration and fantastic writing. Would definitely recommend.

the rollercoaster of emotions is what this story entails. easy conversational dialogues with each character's. plot and storyline keeps the story moving alone very well. excellent listen

twist on guardian angels

Y'all, I read this book at a really rough time. It was the week in between the anniversary of my husband's death and his birthday. I don't think I should have read something this heavy, and I own that. With that being said, this was not the story for me.

T.J. Klune has always been a five-star author for me. Not once have I read a book by him and not given it five-stars, until now. This one is going to get four stars.

I am sure you are asking yourself, why four if it wasn't for me?

The reason for that is simple, it is T.J. Klune. His work is always so beautifully and brilliantly written and Into This River I Drown was no different. The story was captivating, and it was impossible not to love the characters. This was just one of those times it was me and not the book.

If you love T.J. and his work, I have no doubt that you will love this book.

As for the narration, well that was also me. This narrator just didn't really do it for me. It didn't really hit the heights that some of his other narrators did. Again, definitely a me thing.

Of all the books I've read from TJ Klune this one was at times the hardest to read. At first, I was a little thrown by the back and forth between past and present but once I settled in and recognized the past voice with the present one it wasn't terrible.

There was also a lot of repetition which upon review in context actually makes sense for the character's viewpoint. It is not repetition for its sake alone but rather a repetition that becomes like an internal mantra connecting past and present in the mind of our MC, Benji.

Benji is a man who is stuck in a sort of loop of grief over the loss of his father, Big Eddie and that loss is so profound that it taints and colors everything in his life. He is unable to move past it and is indeed so haunted by it that it informs every moment of his life. This connection to his father is at once unhealthy and in circumspect understandable as it is this relationship that becomes a sort of metaphor for the father-son relationship between God and his angelic sons. Seen in that way it offers a much more profound understanding of what a son means to his father and vice versa.

Calliel (Cal) is the guardian angel of the town of Roseland, Oregon where Benji lives, and he has spent the better part of two centuries watching over and protecting its inhabitants. While this is at first a fulfilling job for him, over time the disconnect between him, his father and his other brothers offer little in the way of comfort. He is lonely and longs for the sense of belonging and family. He is drawn by the relationship between Big Eddie and Benji and when he is put to the test and has to offer a choice to one of them it puts him at odds with his own father. He begins to question his purpose, to question the why and for an angel that is never a good question to ask.

Ultimately this is a story of faith hidden in a romance and the profound relationship of father and son. You may get aggravated over the angst and the sheer stubbornness Benji exhibits and you will want to reach through your Kindle and smack him but stick it out cuz, in the end, it all makes sense.

For Love, Angels and Sometimes Both

I was lost within this story such a wonderful read- TJ Klune writes with his heart and it shows . Matt Baca did such an awesome job with such a smooth and perfect voice voice - perfect - every thing was perfect.

Sometimes TJ's characters can get so frustrating because they resist growth for as long as possible. In the end I finish living each book. what a magnificent story.

Loved the character of Cal, but the story is long & too many time jumps are in it. I usually love all of TJ Klune’s books.

This book is centered around grief so it can be very triggering. T.J Klune is one of my favorite authors because of the emotions he can draw out of me by reading his books. His characters are always well written and developed . The story in this one felt a little crowded but I didn't have a issue with it. The narrator was perfect for this book. I've lissoned to this multiple times now so I would recommend it only if your in the right headspace for it. My only issue is that it felt like it left room for more books and I wanted to see what happens next.

I loved T.J. Klunes other book so when this became availiable on audio, I wanted to listen to it - but the title surprised me a little, since it did not sound like a lovestory. And it isnt - but it is.

It is mostly a story about love for a lost father and the depression, sorrow and confusion that comepletly takes over the mind and body of a very young man. It is also about regaining faith in life and in God and the coporal angles aside, it is enough to make you wonder about your own faith.
Surprisingly it is also a suspense novel.
All in all, the lovestory between the MC and his angel is the background tread.

It is very well written, as T.Js other books. Written as it is in first person narrative, you follow the MCs mental jumps through time and place, and it can be a little difficult to remember were you started.
The narration of this book must be one of the most difficult I have encountered and the narrator is amazing! I think it would have been an impossible listen if he hadnt been this good.
At first I was a little irritated of the way it sometimes sound like he is narrating from the bottom of a bottle, but accualty begun to appriciate it as this made me able to follow the storyline better, since it is only done when the MC shifts mental pathways and it helps you to know when the flashback is over.

The story kind of stays with you in the way stories does when it moves you or makes you think.

All in all, it is worth a credit - but you should not expect a light listen!

Convoluted and complex plot that explains enough to be satisfying but not so much that you are left with nothing to wonder about. Could probably have done with a less heavy-hand in some places, but it blended well overall and the narrator is able to smooth over what I think reading would have been more jarring. I was definitely not expecting this and I am really glad I took the chance with this book.
