solid book with great characters and amazing world building. I constantly wanted to know what would happen next.

This is a really good start to a new series. Really refreshing to not have a OP MC. I can see how he may get there at some point but seeing the struggle and and how the MC gets around his limitations is a nice change from a lot of the recent fantasy books. Can't wait for the the next book!

Only thing that I would improve is the narrator's narration voice. There are some scenes that feel less exciting than they should because of the way the narrator reads them. That said, the voices for the characters are well done.

The world and character building is alot of fun! The magic system is innovative ive atleast not seen one like it myself. Really enjoyed the book overall looking forward to seeing the progression in the next book.

If you’re exhausted by the endless stat screens, isekai handwaving, and cookie-cutter power fantasies clogging the progression fantasy and LitRPG shelves, Primal Wizardry (Illusory Education) is absolutely worth your time.

This book respects the reader’s intelligence. It builds a rich, fully realized world where magic feels integrated into the culture and characters, not just slapped on as a leveling system. The magic here draws clear inspiration from D&D with a classic wizard vs. sorcerer dichotomy being at the forefront. It’s something anyone familiar with D&D will appreciate, but it isn’t a D&D clone or rulebook in disguise.

What really stands out is the protagonist himself. He’s no overpowered lone wolf trope. His struggles feel earned, grounded in both the limitations of his magic and the sheer amount of work he puts in. It’s a refreshing change of pace to see an MC forced to grapple with a legit disadvantage rather than just sprinting up a power curve with a cheat class or “stats” being thrown at them.

The worldbuilding is genuinely immersive. Everything feels like it belongs together, with politics, magic, and academy life intertwined naturally rather than a shallow veneer with placeholder secondary characters. The closest comparison I think is ‘Mark of the Fool’ in terms of setting, MC, and execution, though honestly, I’m enjoying this SO much more.

🎧 A quick note on narration:
Oliver Wyman was new to me and I was skeptical going in. But he’s fantastic! Great range, distinct voices for every character, and consistent delivery that made it easy to follow the dialogue heavy scenes without ever needing to rewind or refocus. For Audible listeners who care about narration quality (and let’s be real: we all do), Wyman delivers a top notch performance here.
