Twelve-year-old Hoodoo Hatcher was born into a family with a rich tradition of practicing folk magic: hoodoo, as most people call it. But even though his name is Hoodoo, he can't seem to cast a simple spell. When a mysterious man called the Stranger comes to town, Hoodoo starts dreaming of the dead rising from their graves. Even worse, he soon learns the Stranger is looking for a boy named Hoodoo. The entire town is at risk from the Stranger's black magic, and only Hoodoo can defeat him. He'll just need to learn how to conjure first. Set amid the swamps and sweltering heat of small town Alabama in the 1930s, Hoodoo is infused with a big dose of creepiness leavened with gentle humor.

It starts out mild but it gets pretty dark about half way in with dark forces coming for Hoo Doo. My 10 yr old enjoyed it. Good narrator. Good for kids who are ok with the supernatural. No swearing or sex but a few mild bully episodes and Hoo Doo puts them in their place. There is a demon after him that gets a little scary. Enjoyable for adults.

Hoodoo was a good read. I would recommend for children. Although as an 30 year old I’m not disappointed. I will have my 9 year old take a listen. Loved hearing the familiar traditions of the Hoodoo practice! My daughter who is not as familiar will learn a lot about Hoodoo with this story of a kid close to her age.

So wonderfully written and narrated. We were hooked on the first page. An adorable character that you can't get enough of.
