I love this series and recommend it for anyone interested in PA fiction. My main objective here however is to give high praise to Michael Pauley for his spot on narration. Mr. Nobody has used several different narrators in this series and some were awful, ruining the story for me, however this narrator was fantastic. I could tell who was speaking, male or female, before they were even identified. That’s how nuanced his narration is this book.

Keep using Michael Pauley Mr. Nobody!

Only if someone didn't listen to the others in the series first

What didn’t you like about Michael Pauley’s performance?

The voices were terrible. Why oh why would they change narrators again! He made my favorite characters that I spent many, many hours listening to, sound corny and odd. I really look forward to his books coming out and it was spoiled by the change. Terrible accents, gloomy sounding, not like Bishop, Terry, and the rest are at all.

Why are these authors always screwing with a good thing? It's not the first time I was turned against an author because of it.

Only if they were into the series.

What aspect of Michael Pauley’s performance would you have changed?

Mr. Pauley, no offense Sir, but I kept waiting for Bishop to break into an Elvis song at some point. Maybe Bishop could sing "She's a machine" to Terri. And I just don't remember the Col. having a New England Kennedy accent.
(The Elvis song is from Flaming Star. I refused to link the movie "Stay away Joe to my review.)

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried when the final five minutes was the same as a previous chapter.

I love the series, heck I would not spend the money for all the books if I didn't. Please please go back and give us someone we have all liked. I know I can't do any better, but that is why I do not try and read these for a living.

The overall story was great! First of all, I'm very appreciative that Joe Nobody is committed to the series. Eleven books is extraordinary. Thank you Joe.
I disliked the Narrators voice. He made Bishop sound like Elvis and the President sound like JFK. If that was on purpose then mission accomplished, however I think it was a disservice to Bishop and painful to listen too.
I was extremely surprised by the core character's internal conflict, betrayal, and suspenseful attempts at resolution throughout the story! Then, a sudden turn of events. Brilliant!
Thanks again Joe, your fans really appreciate all of your knowledge and creativity.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Storyline, yes. The story is good, not great. Narrator was horrible though. I'm a gluten for punishment and will continue to muddle through though.

What other book might you compare Holding Their Own XI: Hearts and Minds to and why?

I have read all of the Holding their Own series, plus just about every other Dystopian novel available. 299 Days was much better than this series.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Absolutely ! He was horrible. After 10 previous books, the narrator can't give the main characters new accents. Overall I would say that this was the worst part of the audiobook and I will not listen to another Holding Their Own if they use this narrator again. Do yourself a favor, get Kevin Pierce and don't change again !

Would you consider the audio edition of Holding Their Own XI: Hearts and Minds to be better than the print version?

I love audiobooks. Its great to be able to listen while commuting and the narrator usually adds a nice depth to the book. This time though, I feel like the extreme shift in narrators from previous books hurt the story more than it helped. There were a few times I felt like stopping and buying the book because I disliked the narrator. The only thing that kept me going was Joe's writing.

What did you like best about this story?

I really liked how eleven books in, Joe can still make a great story that keeps you coming back for more. The characters have evolved and grown as the series went along. They are different people and it adds new aspects to the books.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Pauley’s performances?

No. He made Bishop sound like a poor Elvis imitation and the Colonel sound like a poor JFK imitation. I don't even know what Terri was. If Joe goes with Michael Pauley again, I'll just by the paper back and the series will have to take a back seat till I get around to reading it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The plot was but the Narrator ensured that I was not going to.

Pick a narrator and stick with it. The extreme shifts in the different voices really hurt the story.

I didn't care for this narrator and he obviously didn't listen to the previous books. Chapter 18 was a repeat of a earlier chapter so the ending was a loss! In previous books, Bishop's boss had a southern drawl, but in this book it sounded like a Boston accent. Series should have ended.
