Acerca de esta escucha

All Ethan Baines wants is to get on with his life and find a farm where he can operate an organic co-op farm. Little does he know that when he is looking at the perfect property to purchase, he is going to get caught up in a police investigation and then arrested as the primary—no, the only—suspect.
Ethan's possible salvation is when he reconnects with someone from his past - Jack Nelson. Jack is a retired police officer who mentored Ethan when he was a teenager. Along with Jack comes Toby, our famous detective cat. Of course, Toby is on Ethan's side.
Throw in crooked cops, an alcoholic judge with a pet parrot, a greenhorn defence attorney, and a prosecutor called out of retirement, and we have another entertaining "Detective Toby" novel!

An Excerpt from "Guilty Till Proven Innocent."

Ethan opened his eyes. Officer Nash was unlocking the cell. Thank God! They were releasing him. Ethan stood and walked over to the door. His hope shattered as Nash re-cuffed him and led him back upstairs. The detective, Gavin Clanchy, was waiting by Nash’s desk. Nash shoved Ethan into a chair and sat on the corner of his desk.
Clanchy opened the conversation. “You have been a very busy boy, haven’t you, Mr. Baines?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Ethan replied.
“What is it you were doing out on Concession #3 tonight?” Clanchy continued.
“I was going out to the farmhouse to start the yard work. The property owner, Adrian Gale, hired me to get the place in shape before the auction.”
“Is that a fact?”
“Yes, it is. Adrian gave me a thousand dollars to get the job done.”
“And just how is it that you met Adrian Gale?” Clanchy inquired.
“I’m interested in purchasing the property….” Ethan began.
“I’ll bet you are,” Clanchy interrupted. “You want me to tell you what I think, Mr. Baines?”
“Please do,” Ethan mumbled. “At least then I’ll know what’s happening here … why you arrested me.”
“I think you are very interested in the property, but not to purchase it. Your interest lies in what is growing on the property.”
This time, it was Ethan who interrupted. “I didn’t see anything growing on the property. It isn’t being farmed at the moment.”
Clanchy leaned over and looked Ethan in the eyes. Ethan saw the steel blue of the detective’s eyes––cold. “Oh, Mr. Baines, don’t play games. What was growing on the property was not visible; it was in the house and that nice new barn. But you already know that, don’t you?”
“I’ve never been inside the buildings, so I wouldn’t know what was in them.” Ethan tried to lean away from Clanchy’s piercing eyes.
“Do you care to explain how it is that you had a full set of keys to the property then?” Clanchy grinned maliciously.
“As I told you, the owner wanted me to clean the place up for the upcoming auction; he told me I could use his lawn equipment in the garage and outbuildings by the house. He gave me a set of keys so I could access it. I have no idea what keys….”
“Let me tell you what keys were on the keyring we found in your vehicle, Mr. Baines. You had a key to the front and back doors of the house, the garage, the drive shed, and the barn at the back.”
Ethan was frustrated. “I told you the property owner gave me the keys!”
“Well, it just so happens we think otherwise. I believe it is time to lay the charge: Ethan Baines, you are charged with the operation of an illegal marijuana grow operation over $500,000, with the intention to traffic in said illegal substance. We must inform you that you have the right to retain and instruct Counsel in private, without delay. You may call any lawyer you want; I suggest you get a good one.”
Ethan sat there, speechless, his mouth wide open. What kind of a nightmare was this? How did he go from a law-abiding individual, a business owner trying to earn a living, to a drug dealer?
