I listened to almost half of it in a single go it was so good. makes me really feel like in there in the boat with them at times. Highly recommend. (edit) just finished it and this is an excellent book.

I think this must be read by AI. It’s a passionate story, read absolutely flat. There’re no pauses between sections so one event runs into the next without clues for the listener.

Tell the story of these men, well narrated, informative, laid out nicely. It’s sad and amazing men doing what they do.

The massive and meticulous amount of detail researched includes names, ranks, positions, etc. of a phone book number of sailors. Reader will do well to focus on main leaders. Next of kin will be pleased.
Sub operations are clearly explained with story examples including risks, misery, mechanical complexity. The possibilities of unexpected dangers/breakdowns/fatal mistakes are ever present. Makes you sweat just reading it.
Sailors lives and humanity are developed and exemplified.
Japanese POW cruelty is exposed.
Nazi control of Germany is a separate world to those sailors at sea doing their job, trying to stay alive..
If there was mention of a Nazi officer on board, I missed it.
Obedience, bigotry, fear sustained the war. The lives and deaths of many brave souls, technology at sea and air ended it.

It was that good. Wonderful book, I only wish it were longer. Heroes, all of them to the last man.

this is a solid book, but not necessarily great. sort of a classic in the submarine genre, but it felt hurried and slightly out of touch. he did speak to many of the survivors of the early cruises of the submarine, but he almost never mentioned the bigger picture of the war.

submarine warfare is inherently dramatic
