Acerca de esta escucha

On their first date back in law school, Natalie and Will Clarke bonded over drinks, dinner, and whether they could get away with murder. Now married, they’ll put the latter to the test when an unchecked danger in their community places their son in jeopardy. Working as a criminal defense attorney, Nat refuses to rely on the broken legal system to keep her family safe. She knows that if you want justice...you have to get it yourself.

Shocked to discover Nat’s taken matters into her own hands, Will has no choice but to dirty his, also. His family is in way too deep to back down now. He’s just not sure he recognizes the woman he married. Nat’s always been fiercely protective, but never this ruthless or calculating.

With the police poking holes in their airtight plan, what will be the first to fall apart: their scandalous secret - or their marriage?

The sing-song cadence the narrator used for Natalie’s voice drove me crazy. Not sure why narrators take such liberties (this was more than just a tone for the character, it was extremely distracting), it can affect the whole book. Overall though, I enjoyed the book!

Worth the listen

Unless she totally goes nuts, I expect the ending to be as good as the rest of the book. Worth the credit and I am not even finished.

I have 2 hours to go but...........

The story in this one was interesting enough but also a bit predictable. Narration made it a tough listen. The narrator voiced the protagonist in a way that made her sound dim witted. She’s not.

Narration difficult

I liked this story. I was definitely engaged and surprised at the ending. Well narrated as well. Definitely recommend for a beach read or long drive.

Entertaining

I was hooked on this book I listened to it in about 2 days I love the narrator, but when it came to the ending it seemed kind of lazy. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, throughout the book it builds with anticipation to end on a flat note. kind of disappointed but loved the story and narrator.

Great story but lacks a good ending

I was up all night with this book. Great plot, great pacing! Mystery and thriller readers will love it.

Loved it. The suspense keeps you wanting more. I couldn't put it down. Great author and narrator.

Loved the book.

Found myself continuing to listen in hopes it would become more exciting. Unfortunately besides very small glimmers of potential, it didn't.

Just kind of boring

I was drawn into the story from the beginning. The characters are immediately interesting, and I was invested even before the plot took off. I listened to the whole book in about a day. One thing I appreciated very much was that it managed to deal with adult subject matter (affairs, sexual abuse) without being overly explicit. In terms of the abuse, only as much information as necessary was given. The emotional and traumatic aspects were covered realistically without harping on disturbing details. There wasn't anything graphic, either in the abuse or in the consensual relations between adults. It was refreshing to find an author who still understands that writing a good book is not tied to using huge amounts of sex, f-bombs, and attempts to hook through shock value.

Although I really enjoyed the story, I will add the caveat that the narration is weird in places. The narrator's regular speaking voice is fine--extremely nice, even--but when she does the voice of the female main character, she sounds like a bit like a teenager recovering from a speech impediment. It's like she just came from the dentist after a shot of novacaine . . or as though she is holding onto her tongue very lightly and trying to speak at the same time. She also uses a higher pitch voice for this female character's dialogue than she does for the general narration (thus the teenager thing). A couple of times, this got so irritating that I actually exclaimed "just let go of your tongue!" out loud so that I missed what was being said and had to go back. So yes, I guess you could say it broke immersion a bit.

There are both a female and a male lead character, and both are voiced by the same narrator. Usually it's the opposite gender narrators have a problem with, but oddly, the voice she used for the male main lead was great, as was her normal speaking voice. I'm guessing the problem arose because she was trying too hard to differentiate between the male voice (she just did this one deeper, and it was fine) her normal voice (mid-range, also fine), and the female lead (which she made high-pitched with tongue paralysis).

I wish narrators for whom voices don't come naturally would stop reaching so hard in their narration. It's okay if the female lead is done in the narrator's normal voice! This kind of unnatural affectation ruins the whole listening experience.

A great book with strange narration in places

Entertaining book and story.
The audio book really really two narrators though: one male and one female.
That would have made it a LOT better.
The female narrator did a good job, but her voice shouldn't have covered both the female and the male characters.

Needed two narrators, one male and one female
