 The American West in the 1800s was a wild place of danger and risk. Flukes of Fate follows Jedediah Smith as he encounters, trials, tribulations in his adventures.
Renegade Indians plundered the Smith family homestead in Illinois in 1817, when he was just a young lad. Their father, fearing for his children's lives, hastens Jed and his little sister, Nellie, into the woods to hide from the dangerous adversaries.
Uprooted from their home in Illinois, their mother takes Jed and Nellie to Philadelphia to live. At age eighteen, Jed rebels against his mother's wishes and sets out to discover what fate has in store for him. He wanders back to Illinois, trudges south to Mississippi, and drifts into Texas. He becomes embattled in cattle conflicts, and he struggles for his very survival.
By a fluke he is lured into the ranks of the Texas Rangers ranks and life-and-death skirmishes with Indians and outlaws.
With strange twists of fate dictates he is to live the solitary life of a reclusive miner in California.
1859 Jed leaves the gold fields and travels east to Pennsylvania to meet his sister and mother, whom he has not seen for thirty years—journeying through Southern California, Arizona, and Texas. He encounters horse thieves and stagecoach robbers. A past romantic involvement becomes rekindled in Texas, and he confronts hoodlums and land swindlers.
In December 1859, he returned to Philadelphia with emotional uncertainties looming yet an eagerness for the much-anticipated reunion.
