I’ll always remember the news reports from that tragic day. I was 13 years old and we lived in Utah, about a half-hour north of Salt Lake City. The TV news stations and the local newspapers reported the heartbreaking story and it stuck with me for years. Two brothers, not much younger than I was at the time, were playing in a pile of leaves in front of their grandma’s home in Salt Lake when a car drove through the leaves, running over both boys.
Michael Mace, age 11, was killed in the accident. His younger brother, Billy, who was 9, miraculously survived. The story always seemed to come back to me every autumn as I would see the big piles of leaves stacked up along the curbs.
I never imagined that Billy Mace, the boy who survived that terrible accident, would one day have such a profound impact on my life. His miraculous survival at age nine allowed him the opportunity to bless my life along with those of countless others who crossed his path over the next few decades.
