I can somewhat agree with some of the comparisons of this with Mushoku Tensei; there are similarities in how the main character is very much aware of the situation from birth and the parents living out in the boonies, where he picks up reading before he could even walk. But that’s where they stop; the personality and reasoning behind training are very different. Also, striking out on their own happens differently but the reunion with the parents is extremely different. I like a few have started the anime but as always the book gives more details and a better understanding of certain aspects of characters, world and story beats. I look forward to more.

Overall it is a good or possibly great story!

I read the books, I read the comic, I am watching the horrendous anime adaptation of the series and also reading the actual web novel. the story is 10/10 along with mushoku and bookworm.

Travis Baldree is excellent as always.

I had no preconceived notions before listening. Never heard of the author or the history of the series. Chose to listen because the first book was a free listen. After just a few chapters started to realize this is my kind of book.

The MC is relatable and easy to empathize with and connect with. The world building is not too deep but enough to grasp the setting. The dialogue between characters is natural and not awkward. IMO this is an excellent book. My only complaint is that it's too short, but I plan on purchasing the rest.

I listened to this because it was free and because of the upcoming anime. It could be that later books are better written, but this one was standard power fantasy isekai. Without a substantial improvement in quality, I'm not really sure what all the commotion is about with reference to the series. I'd recommend the Cradle series by Will Wight over this any day, even with the first book in that series being a weak entry.
