Maxim Krempenski wants to get through his thesis defense to earn his political science PhD. He must, in order to help his dragon-shifter family survive the new Russia. The Elder Gods have other plans and force him to take a break at The Hotel Paranormal, where he learns fellow student Yuliya Orlov may be even more trouble than he imagined.
Yuliya takes her career advancement in the KGB seriously, so she's happy to follow orders to track and eventually detain Max on her superiors' orders. Then, she discovers the ideological rot at the core of her assignment.
Can they set aside their differences to ensure the dragons have a prosperous future?

This book was super difficult to follow for me. I understand the gist of the story however the transitions seemed really off to me. I felt as though I blinked and a new scene started and I am wondering how in the hell did I get here. The book has the makings of being a very good book however the transitions, the scenes, the writing just seemed completely off. I don't know if it is because of me or if the writer just did not hire a very good editor.
This is my very first book from Tonya Cannariato and I have to say that she has very good ideas which are 100% original but something is not clicking with me. The story itself, if it was cleaned up a bit more, would have been a solid 4 for me but with the transitional issues and the lack of editing it can't be more than a 3. I feel awful because I did enjoy the storyline, but again, just did not flow properly to me.
The narration wasn't great but I'm just assuming it is because of the writing that the narrator seemed to have awkward pauses. There were times where I felt I was drifting because I could not take the random pauses and the random transitions. There are multiple times where I had to pause think about what I just listened to and then go back because I didn't understand how we got from one instance to another.
Take for instance the battle scene. Yuliya is trying to save Maxim and then they go from one plane to being in a bedroom with his sister knocking on the bedroom door. I don't know how they ended up going to a bedroom but I guess it just happened? 🙄😟😕😒
I would have tempt to listen to another book written by Tonya but if the transitions are off I will not put myself through an entire read of a book.
Has all the makings of a great book but just ok 🙄
