The war in Ukraine is the ultimate real-life lesson of what can happen when a country disarms its citizens.
Anti-gun zealots in the United States insist that the Second Amendment’s right to keep and bear arms is a “relic.” Try telling that to the people of Ukraine.
Ukraine never protected its citizens’ right to keep and bear arms. But as Russia was about to invade, Ukraine did a critical about-face. Ukraine’s government encouraged civilians to carry firearms to defend themselves and their country. It handed out 25,000 fully automatic weapons, while Ukrainians rushed to buy AR-15 rifles that American gun-controllers insist “no one needs.”
Did the arming of Ukraine’s civilians make a difference? You bet. Armed citizens have played a crucial role in holding off the massive Russian army. This powerful book highlights how they did it and what they did wrong.
Constitutional scholar and host of The Four Boxes Diner YouTube channel, Mark W. Smith reveals why the lessons learned in Ukraine matter to Americans, and why we must tirelessly resist all efforts to disarm us. Unless we heed Ukraine’s cautionary example, we too may pay a steep price.

I emigrated to the USA in the mid-80s from Scotland and frankly for many years could not understand the “American obsession” as I called it with weapons. However, over the years I have come to realize the importance of those rights.
I have a regular weekly zoom call with my friends back in the UK and from time to time we will discuss and debate gun control. Of course, for decades many of the folks in Europe (and including myself) had become rather smug about the lack of guns and gun violence in Europe, but more recently the debate with my friends stops dead when I point out that the Ukraine gave their citizenry the right to bear and keep arms two days after the invasion by Russia. I think Europeans also want to ignore what happened in the Balkan wars – as not really Europe (it is). In Europe there has been to many incidents of military invasion by neighbors (Balkan wars, Ukraine and never mind WW1 and WW2 etc.) to ignore.
Frankly I doubt anyone would want to invade the USA, the threat is more likely to come from a government over-reach or local violence.
It’s difficult to understand why some politicians become obsessed with gun control and why they don’t want to attack the root causes of violence and they just want to take away a citizen’s ability to protect themselves.
I listen to Mark Smiths YouTube videos on the legal side of the second amendment and his videos are probably the best of them all. He has a very incisive mind, and I can’t help but wonder if many of the judges and justices follow his logical arguments. Anyways a great book to read and understand what the Ukraine war teaches about the necessity for gun rights.
Excellent read.

The most important lesson is what the title of this (audio) book alludes to; that should the Ukrainian citizens have had the Right to bear arms then the Russian government might have had pause to invade, or if they had the initial battles would have been even more so in favor of the defenders.
A cautionary tale for America.

Mark points to several events, many of which I had been unaware of, like the time the destroyed thousands of tons of rifles and ordinance under direction of Barack Obama. There is also the glaring hypocrisy of politicians who want to disarms us here and tell us how “nobody needs an AR-15,” while extolling how Ukraine crucially needs the actual, fully automatic military version of these same guns.
The book is short and much of the material is already widely available, however, I do suggest you read/listen to it, since the book does assimilate the different historical events, under which Ukraine as a country and as a population, were disarmed in the span of only a few decades.
Every American should read or listen to this book
