Editorial review by The BookViral:
A thoroughly enjoyable read, 'Death of a Well-travelled Man' returns to Faukon Abbey, Devon, and a series of unexplained deaths to puzzle local cops, DI Peter Greene and DC Terry Ford.
As they burrow deeper into the mysterious circumstances surrounding both the victims and the suspects, Jimmy Carter, a reporter from the local rag and the perfect foil for the detectives, does some digging of his own.
Layering one crime over another, Lakelett remains in command of multiple threads in true Agatha Christie fashion as the puzzled investigators move from one theory to another, exposing motives and laying bare doubts and insecurities as they negotiate human nature in their search for the truth.
Lakelett shows mastery over her genre, with well-researched forensic detail and a keen eye for human fallibility. Her players meld perfectly, sometimes abrasively, but always remain believable in their relationships.
Twists and turns in both the well-constructed plot and in human connection, add depth to her writing, with flawless dialogue bringing her characters to life and complimenting their construction... She keeps true to the essence of the genre-the crime and its resolution-with just the right amount of tease.
Nevertheless, she is not simplistic in her enigmatic composition, adding just enough spice as her plot spirals towards a climax of resolution, leaving her reader well satisfied and hoping for another mystery to be added to her series.
A great relaxing read for a lazy afternoon- 5 stars and thoroughly recommended.
